V-lux 1

Hi David.

Yes I have a V-Lux1 and I am delighted with it. Mind you, I cannot aspire to an M range, and I am a casual amateur.

For me it does the business with a high quality and loads of flexibility with that variable lens. I suppose that if I had one criticism it would be the weight, but for my needs I wanted something which I can feel when I hold it. It also has the EVF as well as the screen. I cannot get on with screens, so I am prepared to put up with the small screen which I use to review shots and also for difficult angle shots.

I want to get into RAW, but for the time being JPEGS are satisfactory until I have mastered the post processing aspect. The RAW-with-JPEG is therefore useful for getting experience.

Hello David,

Welcome to the forum!

I have no direct experience with the V-Lux 1 but, have been using a Panasonic DMC-FZ30 for over 4 years and recently replaced it with a used DMC-FZ50. As you may know, the V-Lux 1 is a re-badged Panasonic DMC-FZ50 and for all practical purposes it is an identical camera.

As to results, like the majority of Panasonic cameras, noise is a bit of an issue but, nothing that can’t be lived with. The lens is to die for - colours, zoom range, sharpness are really superb; with the usual caveat - sensor size.

The V-Lux 1 was higher priced than its Panasonic sibling and you will hear and read various opinions on whether there are any differences between them. Apparently, RAW images are identical out of the two cameras, while the V-Lux handles JPEG’s somewhat more ‘Leica-like’.

Best,

Jan

David,

I find the V-lux indispensable for those impossible lighting situations. The combination of RAW and the ability to sync flash up to 1/1600 sec, makes it my "secret weapon" against killer backlighting.

Thanks eveyone for your input, the camera just arrived and I am heading out for a few test shots !

David

Congrats - my experience is to stay below 300mm and not to over-estimate my hand holding abilities

Watch out for the eye-piece - mine came off way too easily and was lost [although bought 2nd hand I got a free replacement - courtesy the shop and/or Leica :D]

The viewfinder hood can easily come off too if you use a pole or something for stability.

These trifles aside it is wonderful camera. Ennjoy

Everything purpledot said (although I haven't really noticed anything loose)!

Here's a sunny shot of mine with my SL this AM :) (I didn't see an "I luv my V-Lux 1" thread anyplace :D)

Albeit a bit late, my comment.

I have a Digilux 2 and HAD a D-Lux 4 but was so p*ss*d off with the lack of a viewfinder that I exchanged the D-Lux 4 for a V-Lux 1. Haven't regretted the swap for an instant. The only thing I dislike is having a Jpeg created automatically when shooting RAW.

The D-Lux 4 screen was impossible to view in bright conditions and the zoom was too short for a multitude of shooting opportunities.

I bought the V-Lux 1 'cos I couldn't find a Pana FZ50 for a few dollars less.... But love it.

I've had a V-lux 1 for several years.

Went on a trip to the Baltic and shot tons of photos with slide film and M6.

After I ran out of film, used the V-lux in London for typical tourist shots.

Should have left the M6 at home; it was severely bested by the jpegs from the digital era...

I agree with you on the JPEG with the Raw but recently I have been using my iPad to download the SD card when traveling and the JPEG becomes useful to leave on the iPad without taking up too much memory. I alson had the same issues with the D-lux 4 and sold it after a month. I now find the M8.2 and the V-lux a good combination for most situations.

Thanks for you input.

I had a Panasonic forerunner of the V-Lux 1 and was amazed how good it was. I gave it on permanent loan to a dear friend whose entire R0/DMR/lenses set was stolen. Some months later when my DMR went in for repair, and it looked like Leica might not get it back to me in time for our next trip my backup plan was to buy a V-Lux 1. I didn't do it since the DMR came back.
