Quite a lens.

Sniffy "not a real Leica" types should look away now but I'm constantly surprised what my V-Lux1 can produce. The two images here have had no post processing, other than being reduced five and a half times for the web, both were taken from exactly the same spot, a few seconds apart. The first image is at 35mm focal length equiv and the second (with 4x digital zoom) is 1680mm equiv. Not bad for a 500 GBP camera which only measures 150mm from back-plate to front of lens! Under normal circumstances I would never use digi-zoom for a "serious" photo.

The second image shows the fish boxes at the top of the ladder in the centre of the image, in case you were wondering.

Now, if the V-Lux2 went down to 24mm........ ;)

Opinions?

Is that the panasonic G1?

Hang on this all gets so confusing, this is the FZ or something with the fixed lens isnt it?

Have to make a pretty versitile traveller. What size are you printing?

Theres an FZ35 now which maybe is the VLux2 one day for stupid money?

Pete, how do you find the EVF? I looked at a G1 and the viewfinder was pretty good really. The camera didnt really grab me and the GH is absolutely stupid money in Aus so I think I will pass up on that one, but I might have a good look at the Fz35. It has zoom on movie too I think. The Fz28 is the superseded one I think.

... and the second (with 4x digital zoom) ...

Impressive quality and detail, Pete.

Just to be clear, when you said "4x digital zoom" did you actually mean 4x optical zoom where the lens elements move rather than the shot being electronically enlarged and cropped in the camera?

Pete.

The V-Lux-1 has the equivalent of a 35mm to about 420mm lens. The 4x digital zoom is what brought it up to the 1680mm Pete mentions. This same lens was on several Panasonic forefunners to the V-Lux, including one that I used on our India trip along with my D2. Pete longs for the wide end of the lens to be wider. I would have liked that too with my earlier version.

The viewfinder is electronic. It is NOT the G1, a 4/3rds camera with interchangeable lenses.

Stuart sums it all up here. The Panasonic equivalent of the V-Lux1 is, or rather was the FZ50; both have been discontinued. From memory the "Leica" was about 600GBP before the price fell to clear stock and the FZ50 could be had for just over half that price. They are not exactly the same camera, the body is slightly different in shape and those who know about these things tell me the firmware was different too.

I have three shots in this month's Classic & Sports-car magazine using the V-Lux; I get snotty looks from folks standing alongside with machine-gun Canons with huge lenses but hey, I never used a motor drive and where they may shoot 15 frames and still miss THE one, I can crack maybe 8/10 taking a single shot with my toy camera. :)

It's certainly a formidable lens. I wrote elsewhere how stupidly heavy most pro Canon and Nikon kits are, causing serious back and shoulder injuries to photographers forced to lug them around. Here, then, is an excellent alternative! Or at least a very useful backup camera. The focal range is enormous. With a few modifications I reckon it would be brilliant, a real winner! For example:

An ultra wide attachment down to 20mm.

Bigger SLR viewfinder instead of pokey electronic one.

Simple aperture and shutter controls instead of fiddly buttons and modes.

Ultra rugged build quality.
