bono0272 Posted July 26, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can any members advise whether Leica had produced any M50 F2 in Chrome and using vent hood? I know there is a 50/2 in Chrome with built-in hood but I can't find information about chrome 50/2 using vent hood. Thanks in advanced.

doubice Posted July 26, 2009 Share #2 Posted July 26, 2009 All 2/50mm Summicrons from the 1950's and 1960's used a vented clip-on hood and the majority of those lenses were chrome. Now - which generation of the 2/50mm Summicron are you referring to? Best, Jan

Best, Jan Actually I didn't target on any specific generation, but I hardly find a 2nd hand 50/2 in Chrome and using vent hood in the market. They are either in black with vent hood, or chrome with built-in hood.
giordano Posted July 26, 2009 Share #4 Posted July 26, 2009 All 2/50mm Summicrons from the 1950's and 1960's used a vented clip-on hood and the majority of those lenses were chrome. The original hood for the M-fit Summicron was actually a plain conical clip-on (IROOA). The inverted-cone vented hood appeared somewhat later but can be used on all 2/50 Summicrons until the version with the built-in sliding hood. I know of 3 chrome versions using vented hoods but there are probably others: - Summicron 50/2 "Dual range", 1956-1968: Code # 11918 - Summicron-M 50/2 with convex or concave focus tab, 1978-1994: Code # 11825 - Summicron-M 50/2 "50 jahre", 2003, limited edition: Code # 11615
lars_bergquist Posted July 26, 2009 Share #6 Posted July 26, 2009 John is right of course. All 50mm Summicron lenses until the second model mount of the current version used the same clip-on system for the hood (internal diameter 42mm), but the first hood was the plain IROOA/12571 type. The vented 12585 type arrived in 1963. Both model hoods were used also for the 35mm lenses. The only 50mm Summicron that existed solely in chrome was the collapsible v.1. The v.2 rigid lens was made also in black paint. The v.3 (1969--79) was black only. One black paint DR Summicron is known, if we want to count that variant as a 'version', but it is of course optically identical to the v.2. Craftsman Posted July 26, 2009 Share #7 Posted July 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have the version before the one with built in hood in chrome. It comes with a plastic vented hood( I forget the number) but I replace that hood with 12585 which is metal. This lens in chrome is of course more expensive than the same in Black. I think I paid abuot $1,000.00 used but Mint with case and original box. You hardly ever see them for sale for some unknown reason.
bono0272 Posted July 26, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted July 26, 2009 The reason I am asking is: I have a M6 and M8 both in Chrome, and I love to have Chrome lenses matching with the camera bodies. But I dun like built-in hood for the 50mm lens so I am looking for a 50/2 which is Chrome and using vent hood. I have one but it is a Zeiss ZM. I want to find a Leica product. Leica 50mm f2 M Summicron Chrome Lens (Mint) on eBay (end time 02-Aug-09 21:10:37 BST) I have seen in the past a Mk 4 summicron in chrome with vented hood, so keep looking! doubice Posted July 28, 2009 Share #11 Posted July 28, 2009 ........I want a Chrome 50/2 using vent hood, but I dun think it exists. According to all responses to your original post, such a lens indeed exists. As mentioned before, all rigid 50mm Summicrons from 1956 to 1968 will accept a clip-on vented hood. What makes you think such a lens does not exist? A simple search on eBay turned up at least 30 such lenses...... As to lens hoods - again many posts described the differences between the two that were available. The early one, conical shaped and non-vented was coded IROOA or 12571, the vented metal one had a code 12575. Many chrome Summicrons on eBay will come with the shade; if they don't, the shade is available separately. Both the lens and shade are on eBay all the time. Seek and ye shall find..... lct Posted July 28, 2009 Share #12 Posted July 28, 2009 ...the vented metal one had a code 12575... You mean 12585 i guess. The 12575 was for the Elmarit and Tele-Elmarit 90/2.8 if memory serves.

Pic 1: Summicron 50/2 "Dual range", 1956-1968: Code # 11918 with the IROOA hood but the metal # 12585 and plastic # 12538 vented hoods do fit as well; Pic 2: Summicron-M 50/2 with focus tab, 1978-1994: Code # 11825 with either 12585 or 12538 vented hood; Pic 3: Summicron-M 50/2 "50 jahre", 2003, limited edition: Code # 11615 with same 12585 or 12538 vented hood, unless it has a special hood i don't know. Wrote the post before having had my first cup of coffee I guess..... And yes, the 12575 served the 2.8/90mm Elmarit (E-39), 4/90mm Elmar (E-39), 2.8/90mm Tele-Elmarit, 4/135mm Elmar, 4.5/135mm Hektor (E-39) and 4/135mm Tele-Elmar. Basically - all telephoto lenses with a 39mm filter thread. Similarly, the 12585 will fit all 50mm and 35mm lenses with 39mm filter thread, which do not have a hood built-in. Guest Joachim_I Posted July 29, 2009 Share #16 Posted July 29, 2009 The 11825 is quite difficult to find since it was only produced for a year or so (1993). Good luck. Summicron-M 50/2 "50 jahre", 2003, limited edition: Code # 11615 with same 12585 or 12538 vented hood, unless it has a special hood i don't know. It comes with a 12585 hood (which also carries the 12585 number). However, it does not have the lens engravings of the older, original 12585. By the way, there is a second difference between 12538 and 12585 apart from the material: the 12538 has two vents while the 12585 has three vents. I prefer the two vent design since it ensures that one vent is always at the right place as long as you attach the hood in such a way that the push buttons are placed horizontally. The three vent design only works in one of the two horizontal positions. However, this disadvantage of the 12585 is compensated by the metal construction. lct Posted July 29, 2009 Share #17 Posted July 29, 2009 Yes, also the OP's attention might be drawn on s/h prices of the chrome 11825 which can be close to those of the '50 jahre' 11615 (both around 1,100 EUR here and here). I've never used the latter but i understand that it has the same fingerprint as the current 11826/11816 which can be had for less BTW.
