selfdialogue Posted July 4, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just dropped my 50 lux from 4 ft up down to a concrete ground by accident. The lens cap got damaged as well as the uv/ ir filters outer ring dent. The main concern for me is that the focus ring is now really stiff turning from 0.7-2m. Is there any way to get this fixed? I would hate it if I have to buy a new one. Help!

If it's within 3 years you have a Passport warranty on it that covers all damages and Leica will repair it for ZERO. If you bought it used then you're going to have to use your own dime for the repairs. But I seriously doubt you'll need to buy another one. selfdialogue Posted July 5, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted July 5, 2009 I bought it used so no passport repair for me. I guess i have to send it to dag or sherry and see what happens. Thanks all!

I get the feeling damaged stuff going to solms just get stripped down and reassembled in the product lines, and if there is anything that is amiss and really needs sorting its likely to get missed, and you get dealt other problems that are more trouble than it is worth. Stick with someone that owns their own business and takes pride in doing the job you pay them for.
wattsy Posted July 5, 2009 Share #8 Posted July 5, 2009 If it's the ASPH Summilux I'd send it back to Solms.
UliWer Posted July 5, 2009 Share #9 Posted July 5, 2009 This happened to me with identical results (only that it was a 35-mm Summilux). The stiff focussing was completely gone after I got the lens back when I had it coded for the M 8 without any surplus costs though the lens was out of warranty. (Some different experience with the Leica Service which is often critizised on this pages...). So there is hope that it can be repaired - even if you probably will have to pay for it if you send it in order to solve the problem.
selfdialogue Posted July 5, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted July 5, 2009 My 50 lux is not Asph but the last version of pre-asph. If I send it out to leica for 6 bit coding and comes back all fixed, that would be great. Maybe I take that chance before sending it to DAG. I am going on a long trip in august and definitely want it fixed by then.

I am going on a long trip in august and definitely want it fixed by then. That can be a good idea or a very bad one. Leica will not code a lens that has something noticeably wrong, damage, with it without first contacting you with a estimate to fix what is wrong with it. If you don't OK the repairs it will be sent back to you un-coded (If the repairs aren't done Leica has no way of checking the lens for proper function with the new coded bayonet if there is something wrong with it). That can be expensive but may be needed, and you will get a one year warranty on the lens, because there are some things that Leica can do that other repair centers can not do. Like replacing damaged parts that other repair centers don't have access to. I suggest you first send it to either DAG or Krauter to see what they can do with it and then send it to Leica if they can't fix it and or have it just coded if they can fix it. JBA Posted July 6, 2009 Share #12 Posted July 6, 2009 I dropped my 21 Elmarit back in late March with similar results. After a visit to Solms, it came back last week like new. Cost: approx $US 600. My 50 Summicron rolled out of my camera bag onto a tile floor, and the focusing ring got stiff toward the close end of focus. This one the local Leica repair shop said they were able to fix for half as much. It should be finished this week. A competent local independent repair shop wouldn't even consider doing these repairs and just told me to send the lenses straight to Leica. selfdialogue Posted July 6, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted July 6, 2009 thanks all for great suggestions. I would like to send it to Leica but I fear it might take a long time for them to get it repaired. I emailed Sherry and sending it in to get it checked. looks like I will be shooting with the 35 cron for a while until the 50 gets repaired. gwelland Posted July 7, 2009 Share #14 Posted July 7, 2009 I dropped a 35 'cron ('DUH!') earlier this year and Sherry Krauter fixed it perfectly for me. Like new. In my case the focus ring was completely jammed and even with replacement parts from Leica the repair was very reasonable. Ditto for a CLA & crud removal on a 90 'cron that had to go to Leica NJ (Sherry recommended sending to Leica and managed it for me) - in that case it was less than $210 including postage for a full CLA, The repair including parts for the 35 'cron including parts & postage was just under $300. A year or so back DAG set up my Noctilux & one of my M8's and he also did a stellar job. I'd happily use either again.
selfdialogue Posted July 21, 2009 Author Share #15 Posted July 21, 2009 I just got my lens back from Sherry and the focus ring is just as smooth as before if not smoother! Sherry was very responsive and it was a very quick turn around.

Sherry, if you are reading this, I would like to see you taking on M8 bodies if you can, also 6 bit coding. Russell:)
KM-25 Posted July 25, 2009 Share #17 Posted July 25, 2009 I know this does not apply here, but the 50 Lux Asph has to go to Solms because of the complex floating element. DAG and Sherry won't touch and it and Leica NJ does not have ability to work on it either.
tobey bilek Posted July 29, 2009 Share #18 Posted July 29, 2009 one must learn to not not change lenses over cement. Find a bench or grass.
