rolfe_tessem Posted May 3, 2009 Share #1 Posted May 3, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anybody used this combo together successfully? I picked up the 2x extender at the recent "R" fire sale as I've wanted one for years, and I thought this might be my last shot. It works fine with my 180mm/f2.8 APO and with other lenses I've tried it with, but doesn't seem to be communicating f stop information with the 280mm/f4 APO. Anybody have any info? Advertisement Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Hi rolfe_tessem, Take a look here 280mm f4/APO and 2x APO extender. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
psquared Posted May 4, 2009 Share #2 Posted May 4, 2009 I take it that the extender has ROM. I do not use this combo often, but I know mine works fine with the 280/4 APO and communicates the f-stop information. The maximum aperture still retains the native aperture without the extender, i.e. maximum aperture for 280/4 APO + 2X APO will be recorded as f/4. Here is a sample with EXIF intact. masjah Posted May 4, 2009 Share #4 Posted May 4, 2009 Rolfe Could you confirm: (a) Which R camera you are using ( is the APO Extender a ROM version © Is the lens a ROM version. I've just mounted a ROM APO Extender + 280/4 APO ROM on my R9 to confirm what I thought - the aperture is indicated, and the Extender multiplies it by 2 to give the correct effective aperture in the viewfinder. If any of the three system components are non ROM, then things may be different. My own direct experience is then limited. However, I seem to recall a problem trying a friend's non-ROM long lens with my APO ROM extender and either R8 or R9 (can't remember which) and the aperture didn't show. (I suspected that in such a case, if the R 8 or R9 detects a ROM chip attached, then it seeks to get aperture information only electronically, but with a non ROM lens, the Extender didn't have electronic information at its other end.) Overgaard Posted May 4, 2009 Share #5 Posted May 4, 2009 I might just add here that the non-APO 2X extender is not worth going for. Always get the APO-extender if you want one.
rolfe_tessem Posted May 4, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted May 4, 2009 Further info: Cameras tried are both an R8 and R9. The 2x extender has a ROM. Much to my surprise, the 280/f4 APO seems to have no ROM. I assume this is likely the problem, as my 180mm and others tried successfully with the extender are ROM lenses. To be honest, I never paid much attention to whether the 280mm was ROM or not -- as it works just fine by itself in all exposure modes. As such a newish lens, I'm surprised Leica produced a non-ROM version. If this is indeed the issue and there is no workaround, does Leica offer ROM retrofits for this lens?
