Riccis Posted January 21, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted January 21, 2009 I thought we could trust Adorama's status since the 24 still shows not available... Oh, well
dfarkas Posted January 21, 2009 Share #4 Posted January 21, 2009 Riccis, I just spoke to Leica and the new 21 and 24 Summiluxes haven't started shipping from Germany yet. In other words, none have come in to the US. I have received the Series VII and Series VIII UV/IR filters, though. Perhaps the lenses aren't too far behind. Don't worry... I'll keep everyone posted when I find out any specific arrival date. David
jaapv Posted January 21, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 21, 2009 Not true, end of February at earliest And don't count on that... Leica is not known for speedy delivery on new products.
Rono1 Posted January 21, 2009 Share #6 Posted January 21, 2009 Adorama is known for listing products "in stock" when in reality they don't have any inventory on-hand. I'm assuming they do this to clinch the sale - which is incredibly annoying and not very serious, to say the least. It's happened quite a few times to me already. This is why I no longer shop online at Adorama but rather at B&H.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted January 21, 2009 Share #7 Posted January 21, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) BIG lenses though, as much as I like the M system, it seems some of the new lenses are growing really big.
johnastovall Posted January 21, 2009 Share #8 Posted January 21, 2009 I would never trust Adorama. They once showed a 77mm B+W UV/IR cut filter in stock and were happy to charge my credit card. I had to wait a month to get it and had to deal with some really rude customer service people who would not return calls. I'll stick with B&H or Popflash. DrM Posted January 23, 2009 Share #9 Posted January 23, 2009 How come that some people have a 21/1.4? http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/75941-shellmex-pump-people-out-focus.html M
stunsworth Posted January 23, 2009 Share #10 Posted January 23, 2009 The lens was loaned to the photographer.
andybarton Posted January 23, 2009 Share #11 Posted January 23, 2009 I believe that at the time Brett was using that lens, that was the only production 21mm 'lux that had been made.
sean_reid Posted January 23, 2009 Share #12 Posted January 23, 2009 Pete Souza has been seen using the 21/1.4 but I believe he's the only one in the USA working with one right now. I'm not sure about what's happening in other countries. As David said, stores have not gotten stock yet. Cheers, Sean
bybrett Posted January 23, 2009 Share #13 Posted January 23, 2009 I had the opportunity to shoot with the first lens in August and September last year. Leica commissioned me to shoot a photo-essay at Goodwood Revival, the weekend before Photokina. At that point it was the only 21mm Summilux but when I delivered it to the show two days later there were two.
Overgaard Posted January 23, 2009 Share #14 Posted January 23, 2009 Brett, Those are very convincing 21/1.4 shots you have on Flickr. Looks better than I had expected (and I have been expecting a lot)
bybrett Posted January 23, 2009 Share #15 Posted January 23, 2009 Thorsten, praise indeed, there will be a rush of surreal images as soon as the 21 'lux hits the streets. More to follow on flickr soon...
marknorton Posted January 23, 2009 Share #16 Posted January 23, 2009 My understanding is that production quantites of the 21 and 24 are delayed because of problems with the close focus correction group. You only have to look at the lens barrel of a 21mm Elmarit to see how little it moves as you focus to realise that if these lenses are going to deliver, the movement of the close focus correction group is going to be very small and will need to be extremely accurately set up. I expect Leica are learning a whole new level of precision for these lenses and it's taking time. I have the "big three" on order and will post here when any of them arrives. I expect Leica are learning a whole new level of precision for these lenses and it's taking time. Oh, I don't know. Leica has been building floating-element wide-angles since the 1970s. You think that these require significantly more precision than the 15, 19, 24, and 28 R-lenses? Although your first point is quite possible - look at the trouble Zeiss had getting the 85 f/2 ZM out the door (and their 15 f/2.8 ZM, to a lesser extent). I think Zeiss had to scrap a whole batch of one element in one of those, requiring a delay until they had ground a new batch.
stunsworth Posted January 23, 2009 Share #18 Posted January 23, 2009 I have the "big three" on order and will post here when any of them arrives. My only regret is that there isn't a 'big four' in the shape of a 28mm Summilux. I expect it to come at some time, but that's the fast lens I'd like more than any other on the M8. marknorton Posted January 24, 2009 Share #19 Posted January 24, 2009 Oh, I don't know. Leica has been building floating-element wide-angles since the 1970s. You think that these require significantly more precision than the 15, 19, 24, and 28 R-lenses? Don't know, these are the first wide M lenses with close focus corrrection plus they are at least two stops faster than the R lenses. As told to me, there's a steep learning curve putting these lenses into series production. I'm happy for them to take the time they need.
