Leica 21 lux in stock

Riccis,

I just spoke to Leica and the new 21 and 24 Summiluxes haven't started shipping from Germany yet. In other words, none have come in to the US. I have received the Series VII and Series VIII UV/IR filters, though. Perhaps the lenses aren't too far behind.

Don't worry... I'll keep everyone posted when I find out any specific arrival date. :)

Adorama is known for listing products "in stock" when in reality they don't have any inventory on-hand. I'm assuming they do this to clinch the sale - which is incredibly annoying and not very serious, to say the least. It's happened quite a few times to me already. This is why I no longer shop online at Adorama but rather at B&H.

I would never trust Adorama. They once showed a 77mm B+W UV/IR cut filter in stock and were happy to charge my credit card.

I had to wait a month to get it and had to deal with some really rude customer service people who would not return calls.

I'll stick with B&H or Popflash.

I had the opportunity to shoot with the first lens in August and September last year. Leica commissioned me to shoot a photo-essay at Goodwood Revival, the weekend before Photokina. At that point it was the only 21mm Summilux but when I delivered it to the show two days later there were two.

My understanding is that production quantites of the 21 and 24 are delayed because of problems with the close focus correction group.

You only have to look at the lens barrel of a 21mm Elmarit to see how little it moves as you focus to realise that if these lenses are going to deliver, the movement of the close focus correction group is going to be very small and will need to be extremely accurately set up.

I expect Leica are learning a whole new level of precision for these lenses and it's taking time.

I have the "big three" on order and will post here when any of them arrives.

Oh, I don't know. Leica has been building floating-element wide-angles since the 1970s. You think that these require significantly more precision than the 15, 19, 24, and 28 R-lenses?

Although your first point is quite possible - look at the trouble Zeiss had getting the 85 f/2 ZM out the door (and their 15 f/2.8 ZM, to a lesser extent). I think Zeiss had to scrap a whole batch of one element in one of those, requiring a delay until they had ground a new batch.

Don't know, these are the first wide M lenses with close focus corrrection plus they are at least two stops faster than the R lenses. As told to me, there's a steep learning curve putting these lenses into series production. I'm happy for them to take the time they need.
