kenneth Posted July 2, 2008 Share #1 Posted July 2, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Regular readers will be aware that I have an M6 0.72 Classic with 35mm/ 50mm/ and 75mm lenses. I am now in the very early stages of considering another body so as I can use one body for B&W and the other for colour reversal. I need total compatibility with my M6 but funds will not stretch to another M6. I see M2's and M3's advertised at reasonable money and as I have a Weston Master V metering is not an issue so please feel free to comment, but no squabbling please, because I value your comments. bill Posted July 2, 2008 Share #3 Posted July 2, 2008 Kenneth, I see that the bug has bitten deep I did exactly as you plan when I went to Seville earlier this year. I took my M7 loaded with colour film and my M2 for black and white. Over the years I have used M2, M4, M6 and M7 bodies and find the M2 to be a delight to use. It has a more usable and less restricting viewfinder magnification and set of framelines than the M3 and does not need the goggled 35mm lenses that the M3's higher magnification necessitates. The 35, 50 and 90mm framelines are clear and uncluttered and both easy to see and compose with. Bear in mind with the older cameras that the quality and date of their last service is as important as their original manufacture. Budget for a CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust) by a reputable repairer such as CRR Luton. Regards, Bill
cocker Posted July 2, 2008 Share #4 Posted July 2, 2008 Kenneth - I agree with Bill on the M2. Lovely camera. For a bit more money I also got a M4-P which has a more comprehensive set of frame lines.
Guest Austerby Posted July 2, 2008 Share #5 Posted July 2, 2008 Agreed, the M2 will meet your requirements for compatibility with the M6. An M3 feels like a different camera in comparison. However, you may wish to consider an R2A or R2M as an alternative - less expensive new than an M2+CLA, with internal meter, 0.72 viewfinder, all relevant framelines (including 75mm) and a lovely camera to use - though not a Leica. I happily use my R3A alongside my Leicas.
kenneth Posted July 2, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted July 2, 2008 I thought about an M2 and I guess one would use the M6 with colour reversal and an M2 with B&W. I noticed that MV Classics were offering a very clean example for £345.00 which seems the right sort of price point Welcome, dear visitor! cocker Posted July 2, 2008 Share #7 Posted July 2, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Kenneth - look at Ffordes as well. a fraction more expensive that MW but Ffordes stock tends to be a bit prettier than MW.
elansprint72 Posted July 2, 2008 Share #8 Posted July 2, 2008 Actually, for once, I was being serious.
rob_x2004 Posted July 2, 2008 Share #9 Posted July 2, 2008 I would hold off. A second 6 classic means same loading style, familiarity and interchangability. An m2 or 3 plus the first CLA puts you in 6 price bracket anyway.
earleygallery Posted July 3, 2008 Share #10 Posted July 3, 2008 That M2 for £345 looks great. Its from a dealer so I'm assuming they will have at least checked it if not cla'd it and it'll come with some form of g'tee? An M6 isn't exactly new anymore so I'd be inclined to say that even a s/h M6 should need a cla, in which case the M2 does make sense. I used to have an M3 but didn't like it. In fact it put me off M's so I used a lllf and R until last year when I bought an M2 as well......
wildlightphoto Posted July 3, 2008 Share #11 Posted July 3, 2008 I'd be very tempted by that M2. One question you need to ask yourself is whether you'd be satisfied using the 75mm lens on the M2 w/o matching frame lines.
brianv Posted July 3, 2008 Share #12 Posted July 3, 2008 It is an early M2, with Push Button rewind. Probably early enough that it must be held in place and does not latch as the later ones do. It's like mine, you get used to it. I would go with the M3 and its 0.91x finder as a complement to the 0.72x M6. The higher mag finder makes it easier to focus fast 50's and the longer lenses. The framelines for the 90mm are very usable. The 135 lines are about equal to the 90 framelines on the M2. I have an M2 and two M3's. As far as "Quick-Loading", I keep an extra spool with the M3 and M2, pre-thread the film into it. Makes it a little faster to drop in the new roll. kenneth Posted July 3, 2008 Author Share #13 Posted July 3, 2008 Actually, for once, I was being serious. I realised you were, but, I see digital photography as a totally different art form. In fact since posting this new thread I have decided one camera body is quite enough for my needs and I will alternate between B&W and colour reversal, but thank you all for your input. leitz_not_leica Posted July 3, 2008 Share #14 Posted July 3, 2008 Will the 90 lines come up with the 75 attached to either the M2 or M3?
cbretteville Posted July 3, 2008 Share #15 Posted July 3, 2008 The 75 brings the 50 lines up on all Ms prior to the M4-P which was the first one to include the markers for the 75mm. - Carl
NZDavid Posted July 3, 2008 Share #16 Posted July 3, 2008 Kenneth, is your M6 black or chrome? A huge and contentious issue for some! Why not make your other camera a different colour so you know which has colour and which has B+W film? I have an M6 (black) and M3 (chrome). As I use my 24 ASPH with separate finder quite a lot, it is fine with either. If you don't mind a handheld meter, the M2 sounds like an excellent choice. NZDavid Posted July 3, 2008 Share #18 Posted July 3, 2008 If it has an unbroken L seal that just means it's never been serviced. If it has simply been sitting in someone's collection for the past 40 years, it may still need a CLA -- others will know more on this. But it does look pretty! Crying out to be taken into the wide world.
kenneth Posted July 3, 2008 Author Share #19 Posted July 3, 2008 I agree it does look very nice but as you say, if it has to be CLA'd them by the time you have paid out for that one could have bought a good M6, OK an M6 is not as retro as an M2 but I guess if one is going retro one might as well go the whole hog and buy a pre war Leica. I hasten to add, I am not thinking of buying either, I am blissfully happy with my M6, I only wish I had gone rangefinder years ago focusing is so much easier on a RF with my failing eyesight
brianv Posted July 4, 2008 Share #20 Posted July 4, 2008 You should buy it now. If it was in the US, I would have it "buy now" and send it to Youxin Ye.
