rcoles Posted July 20, 2013 Share #1 Posted July 20, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am looking for a small footprint 13” high quality printer that is easy to use with reasonable ink cost. I do both color and black and white prints, but not a very high volume. When I am getting ready for an exhibit once or twice a year I do a number of prints in a short period, but over the course of a year I might only do 30-50 prints. Jeff S Posted July 20, 2013 Share #2 Posted July 20, 2013 Epson R3000 As with any Epson printer, just run a test print every week or two if you're not printing. Worst case, a quick clean cycle will suffice for an idle machine. Shop around before buying; discounts and rebates are fairly often. These companies make money off the inks, not the machines (much like companies selling razors and blades, hooking you on the latter). Once you get the machine and see the results, I bet you'll print more than you think. And perhaps want somewhat bigger prints. If you're patient enough, you might even find an Epson 3880 for the same or less cost as a R3000 at retail price. It's a 17 inch printer with 80 ml cartridges (versus 26ml for the R3000). Regardless the machine you choose, the key is to develop a disciplined workflow, using sound color management, proper settings, along with quality papers and profiles. Just as in the darkroom days, the gear is only a start; the rest is up to the user. But the Epsons are a good way to start. And this is a marvelous time for inkjet papers, many reminiscent of darkroom days. Check the Digital PP part of the forum for lots of discussions on this and other printing matters. Rick in CO Posted July 20, 2013 Share #3 Posted July 20, 2013 Are you in the USA? Adorama is still running their special on the Canon Pixma Pro-100 printer. Best deal in years (I picked one up).
250swb Posted July 20, 2013 Share #4 Posted July 20, 2013 Most printers do colour well, but the Epson R3000 is extremely good at B&W. The ink cost is very reasonable as they are larger than average cartridges and unlike Canon machines I've had in the past they don't tell you they are empty and stop working when there is clearly some ink left. Leicafanatics Posted August 30, 2013 Share #5 Posted August 30, 2013 I used to have an Epson R3000, it was a good printer until my son dripped his orange juice in it...
