ANyone actually used SF20 & SF24

I can read the spec sheets. Ignoring the GN, anyone actually used both and have preferences one way or the other?

i only use the 20 with the m6ttl. i usually set the aperture at f/5.6. i set the flash -2/3 on ttl. the results are pretty good ... for flash!

I do the same...the SF20 on M6TTL's at -2/3 comp. The results at all apertures have been great. As far as I can tell the SF24 has a bit more power and a larger range of apertures in Auto mode...no real diff in TTL mode.

Be looking to use it on MP not so much to light a whole frame but to freeze up the subject when it gets a bit dark. Variety of flash auto f/stops and plus and minus seem pretty good idea for me.

 

The back of both 20 & 24 look pretty usable.

I used to use an SF20. -2/3 stop at all times, and usually taken off-camera with a Nikon SC17 cord. I didn't use flash often enough to warrant keeping it though.

I have used my SF20 several times with my M7 in TTL mode, and frankly I love it.

 

Taken with the M7 & 35mm f2 asph and Sensia 100

Have SF24, use with M6 Classic and M7. Works great with either. Like M7 because you don't have to feed it ASA or the camera shutter speed information. All AUTO for the M7. -Dick

Same as Dick's post above. We also use the SF 24 on our CM. The Auto feature is foolproof on both our M7 and CM.

 

We gave our SF 20 to our son-in-law.

Aside from being under powered and fixed directionally, works as advertised on both M7 and D2. Also well with the the Nikon SC-17, where it's characteristics noted above can be an advantage.

 

Accurate and pocketable with the above restrictions.

Given the choice, it would be SF24D all the way.

 

The SF20 was and is a decent tool. When used with a TTL camera, it provides a nice fill and illumination in the dark to quite respectable ranges. For non-TTL cameras, you're stuck with 3 F-stops of auto range. Also the SF20 includes a wide-angle adapter, but no adjustment to the range is displayed with the adapter on or off.

 

The SF24D has multiple advantages. First, it provides the same TTL function for those cameras. Second, it provides 6 auto stops to choose from. Third, it provides GN mode function for that shiny M8 you're about to buy. Lastly, it provides both wide and tele adapters with flash range calculations automatically adjusting to the adapter (or none) in use. Oh, did I mention that they used to manufacture the SF24D in silver to better match that chrome M8 or MP.

Thanks Eric, the three to six auto exposures and how well the GN and plus minus info is controlled displayed are really what I am looking at. Am partial to a bit of "Mooondrain" so either twenty twenty four, it might get three colours on black:rolleyes: .

Years ago I bought a SF20 when I bought my M6TLL. I think I've used it once.

I shoot two M6TTL's, one with Kodachrome 200 and the other with 64 and the SF20 if needed. I pretty much dial it back -1 1/3 to -2 stops at all times as I use it to kick in a hair of detail in night time shots. I have a custom built filter kit so I can match the ambient and have even designed and built a "Stealth" softbox out of a jello box, some black gaffers tape and a piece of scrim material. I use it off camera with the Nikon SC-17 cord.

 

The little flash works great, is in full time use all week on a photo essay project.

 

I am not sure why people rag on this flash so much, it is not designed to light up a music hall, just put a little catch-light or fill on a subject in lower than normal light.

I use the S20 with my R8 on TTL mode with P mode on the camera, excellent results, with no red eyes on portraits.

I use also it with my MP in manual mode and got excellent results too.

An SF 24D came bundled with my D2, thought it would be OK, but it's a crapper for velodrome shots, had to get someting much more powerful to stop the action. I guess it would be fine in less demanding situations. Batteries are expensive in the UK.

Pete, the R9/Metz with its wiz flash synchs would have to be the go at the velodrome wouldnt it? Then again the housebrick/AF is hard to beat. Then guys with a little D2 could take photos of you with a crippled back:D.

My back is killing me right now

I bought the Olympus FL-50 which blinds everyone around on full power, wrong connections for the D2, so it goes on the V-Lux. 45 quid for an adapter seemed like a rip 2 me.

I've only used the SF24, so can't compare it with the SF20. I've also only had my unit since last September. However, having used it to take a series of family portraits during a Halloween party I have to say that I'm very pleased with it. It's easy to use, quite powerful for its size, and has a flash head sufficiently far removed from the lens axis to avoid redeye.

 

The image below was taken with the flash mounted directly on my R8+DMR. As the shadows indicate, this is a section of a horizontal shot.
