I am an amateur, and for my 50th anniversary my lovely family told me: choose a leica lens you want, and I am thinking about the Apo summmicron-M 90 mm asph, maybe in titanium finished, anyone knows if its possible to find a new one? and the price maybe....I am a lucky guy, dont you think so?? lars_bergquist Posted March 4, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 4, 2007 This all depends on what camera you are using (a film M, I presume) and your shooting habits. If you are eyeing an M8 the best way to go would be a 75 mm Summicron which is of course a fabulous lens (I wish somebody would give one to me!). If it is a R camera however the 90 would be just fine, because we are starting to suspect that the coming R10 will be a full format digital camera. The 90 mm APO Summicron is of course extremely good. With a bit of care, it will get you detail on the film that you would not be able to see with your unaided eye at the corresponding distance. This is actually true about all the longish APO lenses, the 135, the 90 and the 75. Some like it, some like it not (but you could always put a diffuser on it ...) lambroving Posted March 4, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 4, 2007 Unless your M6 is titanium, why do you want a titanium-colored lens? There are not many around, but they turn up from time to time. People who own them probably don't use them much. Leave a request with some of the big dealers and be prepared to pay. A nicer lens for portraits IMO is the 75/2 which has a more "human" perspective and it is not close to a 50, but will blow your 50/2 into the weeds! It has a short focus throw, a hood which barely impinges on the 75mm frame, is compact and well-balanced. Warning. DOF is very shallow at f2 at close range. Use f4 whenever possible. Eoin Posted March 4, 2007 Share #5 Posted March 4, 2007 Nice lens, it came in black, chrome and titanium afaik, I would however question the APO ASPH as a portrait lens, they, 75 & 90 are somewhat less flattering in their sharpness and contrast than others. Now I have to wait for the payment and I hope, the buyer will pay within 10 days. If he will not pay, there's a chance for you to get one. I use this lens quite often for portaits and love it for that application, it is though a bit slow for low light work. Here I use the lux 75, a bit softer than the 90 asph but very, very fast ( concerts, nightlife but also fantastic for portrait and landscape ). budrichard Posted March 9, 2007 Share #14 Posted March 9, 2007 I have both the 90mm Asph and the 75mm AA. For portraits the 75 is hands down the better due to the better depth of field.
