Picked this up from Geoff H on the LUG...

 

New Voigtlander 75mm 1.8 M lens. The Heliar Classic.

 

I think the price - 795 AUD - may be wrong, but an interesting lens none the less.

Fingers crossed it performs well. The 75mm LTM f2.5 Heliar is a terrific lens so I'm looking forward to this.

Tom Abrahamsson says it's size is roughly between the Leica 75/1.4 and 75/2. He has some pictures from the Heliar 1.8 on flickr.

From Tom's pictures on Flickr, the rendering of the lens looks a lot like the images produced by the Nokton 50 1.1. The Voigtlander signature seems to be a little flatter with very quick transitions from in- to out-of-focus.

I'm completely unimpressed by the pictures shown on Tom's site - no slight to Tom's picture taking ability - I just don't see anything special in this lens. I hope I am proved wrong!

"Classic" seems to mean "low contrast" here.

If it is low contrast in the same way a Summilux 75 is low contrast, this will be a good lens for film and digital. It's easier to add contrast with an enlarger or a computer than it is to take contrast away IMHOP.

Per Steve Gandy's description at Cameraquest: "designed to be noticeably softer wide open for portraits". Too bad. That, plus the crippled close-focus limit (.9 meters vs .7 for the 75 'cron) make this a non-starter for me.

All of a sudden the Cron ASPH is looking like a classic.

I agree with all of the 75/2 owners. I won't be trading in my Summicron either.

Anyway, another smart announcement from CV... 1,8 vs. 2 is probably not significant for who has (or has the money for) a Cron 75 asph: but I confess that should this lens had been available when I bought my Summarit 75... I could have been tempted or anyway, I would have waited for some serious feedback/comparision.

I dont know anything about the Voitlander 75/ 1.8 but the 75 Cron is one spectacular lens. The 75 Cron draws portraits better than just about any lens I have ever used. And it is killer on the M9.

Heliar lens, a portrait lens of great renown. This Voigtlander heliar classic 75mm f/1.8 lens does render a pleasant bokeh and colour, indeed.
