playingolf Posted October 10, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 10, 2009 Any add-on lens element was never a part of the original optical design and at best does a very pedestrian job. I refer to any add-on element, not just on for this camera. The DL4 is an amazing and wonderful piece, and its performance far from pedestrian. Leica chose not to do extension lenses for the DL4 because IMO they seriously compromise the optical quality of their original lens design. Remember, the DL4 lens also has a large amount of barrel distortion that is corrected for in the JPEG, and by some RAW converters...the correction has no idea of the existence of other optical elements and changes by focal length, and would yield unpredictable results. Lastly, adding glass of unknown or questionable quality in front of the fine Leica lens seems silly to me. Now to be fair, Panasonic has a lens conversion adaptor and a Wide Angle lens accessory for the LX-3. It also had a Menu selection in the camera to tell the processing that you have attached this lens. The fact that Leica, the optical company who designed this lens for both cameras chose not to have a lens accessory should speak volumes. Finally, the DL4 has plenty of wideangle coverage, it could do with some more teleohoto coverage IMHO...BUT the images from this camera are so good that they can easily take cropping that would provide the coverage equivalent of a 90mm lens (if not the compression, but that is another story). Bottom line, enjpy your DL4, it is my favorite camera, always with me, and I think the best value Leica has ever offered

nicefor88 Posted October 10, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello Bot, I just bought a D Lux 4 and my first impressions are good. I'm also using a M6 rangefinder. I use the digital for street scenes mainly so the rather short zoom isn't really a problem. I had digital compact cameras with real tele zooms previously but felt quite disappointed with the results. As I do landscape too the wide angle is just what I need. Good luck in your search.
