primetime1001 Posted November 24, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 24, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello - this is my first post. My M8 with the 28/2.8 is on order - having a difficult time waiting for it to arrive. When it does arrive I will be shooting B&W mostly. Will the IR filter have any adverse effect on how the camera interprets the B&W image. Thanks for your comments Hugh

scott kirkpatrick Posted November 24, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 24, 2006 Will the IR filter have any adverse effect on how the camera interprets the B&W image? Sean Reid gave some examples of B/W test shots with and without the filter. If you look at some black garments that were turning purple because of extra IR reflection, they came out low grey without the filter, and a deeper black with the filter. So whether the effect is good or bad will depend on your lighting and your taste in shadow tone rendering. It's certainly not a show-stopper. scott
j. borger Posted November 24, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 24, 2006 Yes it will. There is much to say about this ... but for me (i also shoot B&W mostly) the conclusion is i will not bother using the filters! In B&W people use red, green orange filter etc to get the contrast and separation of greytones they like ...... so "realistic B&W" does not exist: because B&W is an interpreation of reality in all circumstances. If you are fond of VERY VERY DEEP blacks in your B&W work you might consider the filter, because some (and certainlly not all) blacks might turn out dark gray because of the IR shift. In some scenes this is a pro in some scenes probably not. My advise would be: start shooting without filters as soon as it arrives and waite for your free filters in february and try it. Start working on a B&W raw workflow instead of shooting off camera B&W jpegs for maximum flexibility. This link leads to a very worthy investment for B&W/ raw files with the M8 : JFI Color Labs
