M9 tethering to Mac?

I just wonder that Leica is going to have any software tether M9 to Mac like Leica Digital Capture for M8?

Does anyone heard about this?

From my understanding the M9 does not come with ANY type of tethering software, and at this time there isn't any software supporting tethered shooting for it.

The M8 with Aperture 2 on OS 10.5+ will work, however I have heard that it isn't so reliable IE: if you shoot fast, sometimes it will miss captures because what happens is Aperture actually reads what's on the SD card as opposed to 'true' tethered shooting, going straight from camera to computer.

I too would like to see good, reliable tethered shooting capability (preferably for Capture One Pro) on the M9.

Yes, not all Leica shooters use M's in studio, but there are some who do. Fine the M9 does not have LiveView, giving it tethered shooting is the next closest thing. People keep making comparisons of digital M's with highend DSLR's........well that's just another function they can do well.......

I would like to add that when I got to handle a pre-production S2 and M9, speaking to a Leica rep I was told that the S2 will be shipping with some sort of plugin for Lightroom to allow the S2 to tether straight into Lightroom.

They mentioned it *may* be possible to extend this to support the M9. Obviously it depends on how similar/different the USB architecture is in the S2 vs. M9 and what kind of interest Leica has in supporting tethered shooting for a mostly 'street shooting' camera.

That is for copying image files from the card to a computer without using a SD card reader.

The OP is asking about connection the camera to a computer, specifically a Mac, and automatically saving/downloading images directly to the computer as you shoot the shots, Tethered shooting.

Thanks for all the replies.:)

I guess there will no software tethered for M9.

From my memories using Aperture tethered M8. It is slow it write files to sd card before tethering to Mac.

Good but it better to use Tiger OS and Leica Digital Capture with M8. Too bad that Capture One v.4.8 min. requirement is Leopard.

At least this is another reason to keep M8 for a moment.

Kitty--

No help here, I'm afraid.

Yesterday I re-watched the Reichmann M9 intro video. I remember that the question came up. I think Stefan mentioned the Leica Capture program, which apparently is Windoze only. I wasn't watching with this question in mind, but I believe the consensus was that there's no solution for Mac at the moment. Recognition that "it would be nice to have," but no promises.

as can be seen in the page M9 of my website, the M9 is not only a street camera.

Tethered shooting would be very useful, also the way to upload settings, as it will probably be for the S2.

I hope the reason is only technical and not driven by marketing, otherwise it would be a nonsense.

I have found Leica Digital Capture for OSX to be very slow and unreliable--it would often freezeup, unexpectedly quit, or drop captures.

So far the best thing for mac M8 tethering to me seems, is to use Aperture 2, best of all, you aren't confined to using 10.4 (I would imagine as soon as Apple supports M9 DNG's it will support M9 tethering in the same manner).

My preference would be to have the M8/M9 support TRUE tethering to Capture One Pro.

When I was shooting with Canon's both firewire and USB2 tethering on the 1DsMKII and 5D were fast and ROCK SOLID, no matter how hard you pushed.

There is an app (Studio Tether) that can sort of serve the purpose. It is more geared to Canon and Nikon shooters, but it works with the M8.

Its free, I'd guess that the vendor may be interested in supporting Leica's if there was a ground swell of interest.

Given the limited information from the camera available through USB (at least on the M8) I don't know how much value you'd get out of the app, but its worth a look.

I am waiting for a Mac tethering solution as well and I was advised that the proprietary Leica Image Shuttle will be introduced by November. I was told by my contact that Leica will integrate both M9 and S2 in Lightroom workflow for tethering and camera controls. I hope that the info was correct.:)

WOW!!!!! Thanks for sharing this!!! I can't believe I have not seen this before.

It looks like it works using the same architecture as Aperture (builtin Apple OS) to tether, in that it actually reads what's on the SD card. This is good because its so small and light of a program!

Unfortunately the problem is that it will miss transferring captures if you continually shoot WHILE it attempts to transfer files to the computer. Like Aperture, the files will be fine on the SD card, but some files will be missing on the computer.........

No it is really too bad that Leica made the compatibility unique to the pc system.

Anyone want to take a guess as to the ratio of Mac users to PC users in the photographic world?

Woody

There was an informal survey here once, and the results was 80% Mac.

There is a version for Mac OS X, but it stopped working in Leopard. I don't know why Leica never updated it for Leopard (or Snow Leopard). I suppose they don't think that a significant number of people want to use their cameras that way, which might be true.
