dugby Posted November 24, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 24, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can those who have used the D3 / L1 comment on using the Live-View feature. a) On some reviews it was mentioned when using the Live-view feature, there is some mirror-slap noise when the mirror is being folded away to allow Live-View. Just how loud is this noise....is it like a traditional SLR mirror slap sound ? Once the mirror is folded away, does this now present the user with a better chance of shooting a hand-held slow shutter speed, eg less than 1/10sec , together with OIS switched on ? For example on my D2, i have got some quite acceptable indoor 1/4 sec hand held shots at f2.0 So with the F2.8 D3/L1 has anyone tried to use the live-view with slow shutter speeds? Anychance of posting some examples....please
Advertisement Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 Hi dugby, Take a look here D3 and/or L1 in "Live-view mode". I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Riley Posted November 24, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 24, 2006 i dont own D3 or L1 but... i can say that the OIS aboard that lens is the industry standard and will give you 2 or 3 stops you would otherwise miss so just my judgement, and based somewhat on my LC-1 experience, but... at 28mm handheld you would normaly need 1/25th thats 1/15th with some risk but D3 L1 is a F2.8 lens making an 1/8th just achievable pure guesswork but i would try it Riley
dugby Posted November 24, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted November 24, 2006 Thanx Riley, however I would suggest that the Mega OIS being described as an industry standard, may not be the words Leica would use, rather 'Industry leader' may be a better choice. There's more to the issue, i raise in this thread. When live preview and AF are chosen on the D3/L1, the mirror slaps up for live preview, and then for AF to work, the mirror slaps down, the lens focuses, and then mirror slaps up and down again to take the shot....ie during shot ,we get 3 mirror movements. Apparently in manual focus mode and live preview, the mirror stays locked away for the shot. My question for any D3/L1 users, during manual focus and live preview, can you take a series of shots with the mirror locked up. I'd like to shoot a D3/L1 in orchestral concerts, with no mirror noise slapping and vibration free for slow shutter speeds. Can the D3/L1 stay in the live preview mode for a long period for the duration of a 1 to 2 hour concert without having to swing the mirror up? The D2 is great for total silence during a concert. karlitos Posted November 24, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 24, 2006 The answer I'm affraid is NO. The mirror and shutter reset every time the shutter button is depressed. Thus giving you that wonderful 'clunk and whine' sound, even in MF. In fact what you can do in Live view is pretty limiting, but I never bought it for that. BTW am i the only who thinks that Leica is being cheap providing software that needs a plug in to take the RAWs? Not that I neeeded it anyway it just struck me as tight. Can't think of any other manufacturer that would do this. Karlitos
dugby Posted November 24, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted November 24, 2006 thankyou karitos. HELLO PANASONIC FIRMWARE ENGINEERS, please consider adding to the next firmware release, the ability for the L1/D3 to work in continous 'live preview' mode with manual focus on the LCD, without reseting the mirror. Film SLRs can lock up the mirror, at the users choice. we used to do this for reduced noise and vibration for slow shutter speeds. Now with live preview, this would be very useful......and another panaleica unique feature and 'industry leader'....
Riley Posted November 25, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 25, 2006 dugby basicly this part of the camera comes from Olympus so to find out where its going next watch out for new Olympus adventures im only guessing here but, i get the feeling there is room at Panasonic for at least one more dSLR, or perhaps perhaps, LC-2. As to Olympus, they have the need to replace E1 on the other hand, post the FZ50 firmware petition we already know that yelling at Panasonic is like firing a bazooka into a black hole Riley

If I did need the software, I'd rather have Photoshop Elements than a proprietary raw converter.
