mborkowski14 Posted October 7, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 7, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) So I've been shooting with my M8.2 for a few weeks now, and absolutely love it. I had, however, pre-ordered an X1 on 9.9.09, but am having second thoughts. While the X1 is a fantastic piece of machinery, I don't know if I can justify the $1,995 price tag on it when there are so many lenses I can purchase for that price. Long story short, I'm writing this to see what D-Lux 4 users think of their cameras. I was considering the DL4 before the X1 was announced, and since having purchased the M, I feel like the DL4 might serve just as well as a good companion. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks all! Matt
Advertisement Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Hi mborkowski14, Take a look here Companion. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
danyves Posted October 7, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 7, 2009 Once you do have a M8.2, you do not need a digilux. For $1,995 you can find second hand Elmarit 2.8/24mm [32mm on the M8], an outstanding and exceptional lens. A marvel on the M8. A all around lens. gfspencer Posted October 7, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 7, 2009 The X1 is a beauty but a little out of my price range so I just bought a Panasonic DMC GF-1 for a "companion camera". Once my adapter arrives, I can use my Leica M lenses with the Panasonic body. (In the meantime, the Panasonic kit lenses aren't bad.)

I downloaded some of the JPG images posted over at DPR and with the kit lenes, 20 f/1.7 (40mm on 35mm frame) & 14-45 f/?-? (28-90 on 35mm frame) the images don't look bad, even the high ISO shots. wilfredo Posted October 7, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 7, 2009 Is any camera really a companion to the M8 other than another digital M which would allow you to use the same lenses? My alternate cameras are Canon DSLR's and recently I've discovered the joy of Leica R lenses on Canon - which can be purchased used. The Digital Rebel T1i is fairly compact and light. Because of the hefty price tag the X1 has no appeal to me.
danyves Posted October 7, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 7, 2009 See for a second hand M8.1 in which you will set firmware 2.004. You should find around $2.200. Better choice. Hmm, $2500/2600 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/market/categories/m-cameras.html

Because of the hefty price tag the X1 has no appeal to me. Wilfrdo I agree with the X1, no appeal for me either even if it had a lower price tag. None of the Sigma DP series either. Don't want a fixed lens. The last camera I had with a fixed lens was a Yashica?? Electro 35?? that I took on my tour of Europe in 1971. I actually sold that camera in England (ran out of money) for more then I paid for it in the states. Companion means to accompany/go along with, not to replace. The only camera that could replace the M8, at least for me, is either another M8 or the M9. But this Panasonic camera looks good as a companion camera. Especially with the M>m4/3 adapter and their 14-45 kit lens. I have no desire for a SLR type camera. That is one reason I never looked at the Pana G1 or GH1. But I could put the adapter on the GF1 and then a Leica body cap and throw it in my bag ready to use any of the 8 M lenses I have.
danyves Posted October 7, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 7, 2009 Imho, companion camera for a M8 does not have a real sense.
mborkowski14 Posted October 7, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted October 7, 2009 All great advice guys. I just found a near mint CL on Craig's List for around $500. I'm going to check this out, and I'm definitely considering the Elmarit. I'm currently shooting with a Voigtlander 35mm Color Skopar and a 50mm Cron. The 28mm would be a nice addition to the lens collection. Thanks again!
danyves Posted October 7, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 7, 2009 The CL will be great with the 28 Elmarit.
trs Posted October 7, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 7, 2009 If you want to deal with film, cl would be great I think. But, if you are willing to spend 2K for X1, I would just get a used M8, I am sure you can find one around that price. Then, attach to 28Elmarit ASPH. You are golden. Beside, I personally don't like the design of the X1. No real view finder built-in. Lens goes in and out. I wouild rather have that manual focus if I had to to avoid extending the lens. Lastly, the white top and bottom just feel not ballanced, I think it is due to being used to M's look. But, these are just my personal taste. I was hoping X1 to look close to Canon DateLux.
