shootinglulu Posted October 6, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hallo. I bought my 28 cron, new, a month or so ago and it has slight play in the apperture ring at f2, just a mill or so, i wonder if this is usual and ok? Thanks, Lucy
Advertisement Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Hi shootinglulu, Take a look here Play in apperture ring. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted October 6, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 6, 2009 What do you mean by 'play' exactly?
wizard Posted October 6, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 6, 2009 If you mean that it is possible to turn the aperture ring a little beyond its maximum aperture setting, f2 that is, no worries, that is perfectly normal. Andy
shootinglulu Posted October 6, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted October 6, 2009 Sorry not to have been clearer. With all aperture settings, other than f2, when just feeling the aperture ring causes no movement. In f2 there is a wobbling in the groove. Thanks a lot. earleygallery Posted October 6, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 6, 2009 I guess you would need to compare directly to another lens but some play is normal (it's a metal lens casing and there has to be some tolerance as metal expands/contracts with heat). Guest finofoto Posted October 7, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 7, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) hello, this is (unfortunately) normal with Leica (M)lenses: the aperture gear-ring is hold with a spring - quite flexible and different for each lens... and this causes the wobbling. (so a mechanic declared this issue to me and explained, that he could not "repair" it). even with my sx 21 i have this phenomen, hope it helps, tom
hoppyman Posted October 7, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 7, 2009 Hallo.I bought my 28 cron, new, a month or so ago and it has slight play in the apperture ring at f2, just a mill or so, i wonder if this is usual and ok? Thanks, Lucy A millimetre or so??? There is a detent each half stop and you can pop the ring just out of that detent on mine (nominally past f/2). Can you look in to confirm that there is no diaphragm movement when you move the ring past f/2? If so (and I expect that to be the case) then there is no functional problem or error in operation at all. I just checked every other Leica M lens I have (all modern) including two that Solms have just adjusted to perfection for my M8 and you can pop the aperture adjustment ring just out of the detent in that direction in every case. I don't know where you are Lucy but you could certainly ask Solms for advice if you are concerned. My take is that you have no problem at all and one of the best lenses on the planet. Enjoy. dkCambridgeshire Posted October 7, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 7, 2009 I had a wobbly aperture ring on a new Mk IV 35mm Summicron M - sent it to Milton Keynes and they remedied it. But before sending it I got a second opinion from another Leica dealer that it was in fact outside normal tolerance. Cheers dunk
delander † Posted October 7, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 7, 2009 The aperture rings on My 28, 35 and 50 crons can all be moved very slightly past the F2 detent. I think this is normal. Jeff
rob_x2004 Posted October 8, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 8, 2009 Send it off to Solms. When it comes back it will be so loose and floppy a strong breeze will shift it for you. 'Normal tolerance' ...................... ................... :D:D.
dkCambridgeshire Posted October 8, 2009 Share #12 Posted October 8, 2009 Send it off to Solms. When it comes back it will be so loose and floppy a strong breeze will shift it for you. 'Normal tolerance' ...................... ................... :D: The fact that the looseness was remedied suggests that when newly purchased the play in my lens' aperture ring was outside 'normal tolerance'. If you find that would you please justify your remark. dunk
rob_x2004 Posted October 8, 2009 Share #13 Posted October 8, 2009 Normal tolerance is whatever whoever at Solms does on the day. Its a screaming joke.
