Is everybody happy?

Fabulous bit of gear! I am now renewing my original relationship with my fabulous lenses. They have revealed their original identities on the M9. Just like getting a new mistress (I imagine ;) ).

There are some qualities, that I cannot quantify, in the M9 that sing beautifully. Just as beauty cannot be defined by numbers, neither can some of those attributes of the M9 be defined, but all users will be aware of them.

I recommend waiting all around :)

Carsten - helpful. My feeling too. My old dual xeon was built by a very nice guy in Warsaw 4 years back and my laptop will still do the business for a bit. Planning to hold on for 12-18 months and then leap into the 21st century (:))...

I've used M2's since 1970, M6's since 2002. I've taught digital photo courses since 1991 (one dinky camera), so I have enjoyed the evolution up to the present. I skipped the M8 because it was clearly a transitional piece, and I wanted a 35mm lens to act like a 35. My four days so far with the M9 have been a great thrill; the camera behaves just like my old trusted ones, and the files are exceptionally smooth. Reflections off water and windows, and specular reflections are silky and subtle. The range is lovely; extreme highlights and shadows are well-textured. Any mistakes are your own.

I have my camera set to Soft release, and I don't understand the "lag" complaints, every footstep is right where I want it, and various captured gestures are on the money. I'd buy another one tomorrow (via plastic) but everybody waiting should get one first.

Absolutely NOT happy. There should be a law about announcing about a release of a product and having nothing to sell. That's called corporate lying!

Consider some of the facts arthury!

The M9 was announced, released, and continues to be released. The fact that you, and some others, do not have yours yet, for a number of reasons that you and I are not privy to, cannot by any stretch of the imagination be called "corporate lying." A much closer description would be something like "demand excedds supply", which is something many businesses would envy.

Life is just one big queue and you are not at the front, yet. Patience is said to be a virtue, and certainly helps the blood pressure. I hope your M9 arrives soon. It will be worth the wait.

Not to start a windows thread, but,

I am using Vista (the hated windows) 64 bit with CS4 and lightroom 2.5. No problems and the big internal memory room is a delight. All my programs do work, my Nikon scanner also works. I have more problems with my XP machine.

Best,

Henk

Yes but you can enjoy the anticipation, and there are many more coming through now.

I moved to the M9 from using my fathers sixties M3 and a modern Nikon D300. I do not regret to switch to the M9.

The downside is the limited time to spend with the camera besides family and work ;-) I haven't had so much photo time vs. techie time in the past two years. The M9 disciplines me in a way that's helpful for me. Focus yourself on the shot not on the accessories.

These were my 2 cents...

Anybody still imagine how unhappy the first customers of the M8 where, when they had to send it back for a update ? Its better to wait for a while ...:D

I am truly delighted. Only things I would change immediately is the time it takes to overwrite or format my (16 GB) Cards. You will need another M9 to take pictures while the first does its format thingy. LOL

Woody

I agree wholeheartedly Woody. I nearly switched mine off and pulled the battery thinking there was a 'problem.' I expect (Hope) this will be addressed in a near future firmware update. We need a bit of patience while energies are focused on getting cameras to others.

Same here. Was very surprised it took so long. (16GB Sandisc Extreme III). However, had never used 16GB card previously and so had no comparison. In any case, the cards work perfectly. Therefore to me this is no particular disadvantage. The 16 GB are useful when using uncompressed DNG.

I still can't quite tell if I'm happy or not.

On the one hand I love the way the camera feels and handles. I am quite sure that these tactile factors encourage me to take better shots, just like gorgeous brushes and paints can inspire a painter. And I really, really love the way the files sing so beautifully when you get it right. And I love the fact that though there are slightly fewer pixels than my 5DII, the immediate feel of the shots on screen is more like my P45+

On the other hand, this is the fourth (possibly fifth, can't quite remember) digital M I have had and like all bar one, it has had to go back, already, because its RF is incorrectly adjusted. None of my trusted lenses can be coaxed to infinity. Then there's my brand new 18mm F3.8 which goes way past infinity and is susceptible to a slight red cast to the left hand side of the frame for reasons which I and others are currently still trying to fathom. Then there's the fact that the camera itself is far to slow to read, write and erase cards.

All this can be fixed, either mechanically or in later firmware, but I keep getting the feeling that I ordered a Porsche and got a Maserati... again.

My rangefinder was "out of whack" as well. Both infinity and near adjustments needed to be adjusted.

Not difficult if you're mechanically inclined and don't mind some risk. Good instructions available via search on these forums.

Not really ... My M9 sensor was dirty from the very beginning !!!! Believe me from the first shot ! I mean ... factory control didn't realize it before shipping !! I had to return the camera to the italian importer for cleaning and still have not got it back; and what is worse is that they answered my complain saying that it can happen since the first time you put a lens on. Even better ... I emailed Leica Germany customer service and have not got any answer since a couple of weeks. I never expected it from Leica ... but you know times are changing.

I'm just curious, was the box "sealed" or not? I mean, was there the Polyphoto sticker to "seal" the package or not?

I don't want to blame you, but, why on earth did you send the camera back just for a dirty sensor???

My M8 has spent more than 4 months away from me when it was broken (three times), anyway, Leica Germany had the camera in their customer serivce for fixing for just about 10days (total of three repairs)... guess where did my camera spent the remaining days?

Always had great service from Leica in Germany.
