No M9 in Tokyo yet

FYI (for Tokyo readers):

Over the weekend, I ran around various shops in Tokyo and no shops have them in stock. One shop in Shinjuku (Map Camera) told me that they're backlogged for 3 months till Jan 2010. Price-wise, various shops range from Y680,000 -> Y777,000 (current exch rates USD$7625 -> USD$8713).

Probably more worthwhile to fly to HK but they're backlogged there too.

I don't think you'll find M9s in stock anywhere on the world right now. From what someone just posted on the German forum about Leica in Portugal, it seems that until at least January they're busy producing pre-ordered cameras.

I was fortunate to receive mine last weekend from Leica Ginza, but only because I pre-ordered just prior to the 9/9/09 announcement. So you're right, there is a substantial waiting list, not only at the various authorized dealers, but also at Leica Ginza.

Eric,

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay (presumably in Yen)? I've seen radical prices - Fujiya Camera Nakano for Y680,000 and Map Camera for Y738,000 (3% points), Yodobashi Y738,000 (10% points)...and can't remember where for Y777,000.

Cheers!

I paid the full retail price in yen, which I think is around 770,000 yen. If you can wait (and I guess there's no choice now), then it's better to buy at authorized dealers such as Yodobashi or Bic Camera since they'll give you a 5% discount, and then a 10% point-credit for future purchases at their stores.

I don't think Map Camera is an authorized dealer; at least they're not on the list at Leica's web site, if that matters to you. Seems like Fujiya, which is a Premier Dealer, has a good price.

The prices aren't so obscene if you calculate the exchange rate at 100 yen :D

Yodobashi offering a further 5%!? Wow! I've got their point(o) card which gives 10% and thought that was great already but another 5%? You're tempting me to book and wait for the M9 at Yodobashi now :D.

But with the -current- exchange rate, it'll be a dream to be able to fly to US for a holiday & pick up an M9 at the same time - if only they're readily available in-stock there :-(.
