Aftabulis Posted November 23, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 23, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a DSC-150 7.2mp point and shoot sony and I like it, decent pictures and a great video mode, but it doesnt h ave that magical color presence that I want... Do you think it would be better to get the leica d-lux 3 or is it just another point and shoot that looks cool and maybe takes nominally better pictures than an equivalent p and s that doesnt have the leica name for less money.? For example can you control the zoom and manual controls from the lens or is it like a regular digicam with manual controls as settings in a menu, and are there even any manual controls at all like the d-lux 2 has? I really like the lux3 but I was really just wondering which one will yeild more pro quality and artistic feeling pictures that or the lux2, (or even the panny version the LC1) until the m8 is ready for a safe purchase.... Recomendations? Summary... Dlux2 vs. Dlux-3 , will the bigger lens make for much better quality pictures or will the Dlux3 make for better more artistic proish results, or possibly the m8 and hope for a good update (forget that I dont want to get off topic)? Not quite sure which cameras you're referring to - the D-Lux 3 is the Leica equivalent of Panasonic's LX2 (and the D-Lux 2 = LX1), while the Digilux 3 SLR is the equivalent of the L1 SLR (and the Digilux 2 = LC1). The D-Lux 2 and D-Lux 3 have the same 28 - 112mm lens, the latter has arguably an improved set of features like the wideangle LCD screen to match the lens and sensor, though it employs the Venus III engine which some feels reduces some detail when removing noise. Both are fully manual cameras.
Aftabulis Posted November 24, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted November 24, 2006 I think I had the names wrong because the two cameras I am looking at are very different. I really confused myself now... How can both of these be the digilux 3? Leica Digilux 3 eBay: LEICA D-LUX 3,D-LUX 3,LUMIX LX1,LX2 (item 250051868467 end time Nov-29-06 17:19:28 PST) Or is one the digilux 3 and the other the digilux 3 slr? I thought the one below was the Digilux 3 and wanted to know if the samller sized black one below was comparable to the SLR models and the pic I saw of the digilux 3 is this: which would you recomend for me if I am looking for more of a professional grade camera... I know these questions sound really stupid, I would hate to hear these if I was an expert in Leica cameras, I just dont want to buy the wrong one and regret it forever. BasicallyI wanted to get the m8 but I would rather get one of the SLR type Leica Digilux models and wait until all the bugs are worked out... Then I saw the one pictured above in black, and got confused thinking that was the digilux 3That being the case which camera would be the best replacement for the m8 that will yeild the best quality as well as the Leica feel to their images.... dugby Posted November 24, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 24, 2006 Hello and welcome to Leica. I have both of the above cameras. The top camera is the Digilux 2, and the lower camera is the D-Lux3. The Digilux 2 (aka D2) captures and produces much better images than the D-Lux3 (aka DL3), even though it is only 5MP. The proof is only seen when you shoot both cameras side-by-side under the same conditions, shot with RAW. The difference is very significant and can be seen on both computer monitors and printed images. The result is clearly due to that fast and wide summicron lens on the D2. A good example of where having more MP does not produce better images, and what matters more is the lens. Which is also what we are also seeing with the M8 and R9/DMR versus 16MP other brand cameras. However the D2 is much heavier at 705g, vrs DL3 at 220g. D2 is much larger than the DL3(which fits in a shirt pocket). The DL3 has a 16x9 sensor.......which is quite interesting, D2 sensor is 4x3 only. DL3 has OIS, which is very good for 112mm tele shots, D2 has no OIS If you could only have one, and image quality is the main criteria, then the D2 is the better choice.....which is what I understand to be your objective. Aftabulis Posted November 24, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted November 24, 2006 What about this model Is this much better than the diglux 2 which has no interchangeablee lenses... Is the Digilux 3 the obvious choice if you dont mind spending the money? BTW I take it that the D-lux and the digilux are different and that is what was causing my confusion... SO my real question from tyhe beginning should have been is the Digilux 3 worth the price difference between the digilux 2.... And just to clarify it is the d-lux 3 not the digilux 3 that takes 16:9 right? God I hope so otherwise I am so far off its crazy....
dugby Posted November 24, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 24, 2006 Ok this camera above, is the Digilux 3 (aka D3) and the images are superb. I have not A-B'd the D2 and D3 side-by-side, but I have no doubt that Leica would have made sure that the D3 which is the stated replacement to the D2, to produce better images. The few images that are trickling through are superb. The D3 sensor is new, 4x larger, lower density in MP per square mm, therefore likely to be much better than the D2 sensor. The D3 (with standard Vario-elmarit lens) is significantly heavier and larger and more expensive than the D2. As you say $$ is not an issue, then the D3 though heavier and larger is likely to be better image producer than the D2. The D3 is the same camera as the Panasonic L1, which is much cheaper.
