He can correct me if I'm wrong there. I hope that 25-page Q&A will clarify this. Hi Andy, That's correct. The someone was none other than Stefan Daniel. The vignetting correction is applied before the RAW file is written. I anticipate the same will be true for the correction of cyan drift in the outer zones. canlogic Posted November 23, 2006 Share #45 Posted November 23, 2006 If it must go back to Germany I would assume they will set up some kind of a scheduleing system whereby you would be sent a prepaid shipping box that you would drop your camera into and call Fedex. Hi Ruben, If I can get confirmation from Leica that the filters they'll be using are, in fact, the 486s then there are a group of us who will be working with a color expert to have a custom color profile made for the M8 + 486. Some of us who are already shooting paying work with the camera (myself, Guy, Chuck Jones, Jamie perhaps and others) need this profile. As you know, custom profiles have been worthwhile for various pro cameras no matter what the manufacturer, C1, etc. provide. I'll know more next week. I think that Jamie's profiles are going to be especially helpful for files made with those two lenses which have no filter threads (and which would should strong cyan drift in the outer zones). One can't fully profile around an IR problem but I think profiles like Jamie's may be especially useful as a compromise solution for lenses where the IR filter just isn't a good option. MSmelik Posted November 23, 2006 Share #48 Posted November 23, 2006 All sounds very reasonable to me, free filters, 30% of lens etc. I think leica has done their best to provide a good solution .... nevertheless the fact that filters have to be used on such a camera still sucks .... A well known Dutch leica user recently commented that in pas times people would see the red dot on ones photocamera and look in admiration .... now they will see a huge red front lens and think "poor sods" or something to that extent .... I read the preliminary part and I do think there is more to this announcement from Leica. Sean and I talked on the phone yesterday and I agree Jamies solution will be valuable for like the C/V 15mm lenses and also we need folks to start working on profiles for the cut filter also, I am happy Leica offered what it has but as a working Pro I can't wait on Solms to repair my M8 . This camera is in service so I may have to get a second fixed one to work with or some kind of plan needs to be in place for working pro's . The 30 percent off is a welcome sign but again if I have no body than i will pass on it. This for me is not about the money but as a working tool. I already spent a LOT of money on filters and frankly I may need one more for a Noctilux and 30 percent off that would be helpful but again i need a working tool. So maybe there is more to this announcement for folks like me that need to get to work and exchange for a new M8. I am hoping for a couple options here since we all don't wear the same shoes. On the other hand Leica is doing the right thing by there customers so far and I am sure it will get better when we hear the official announcement tomorrow. Think positive this will all work out and in a couple months most of the issues will be forgotten and we as leica fans can get back to whatever we do best. I am so sad I did cancel my order, but I will not buy a camera that needs R Filter, I have too many lenses, of which non-Leica wide angle (VG 12 and 15, 35mm 1.2). chetccox Posted November 23, 2006 Share #53 Posted November 23, 2006 I have been to Hong Kong many times, (hundreds in fact) and I don't think, except back in the 60's, that one can find a leica lens or camera for 40% off list price. If so, where? Not to mention the fact that when you are finally done with the transaction you probably have a 30 year old lens for a camera that is not longer made that has been passed off as the latest model. On closer inspection I find MANY supposedly 'black' items have a purple or mauve (read magenta!) tint. We tend to ignore when we look at these, but it is especially true in mixed lighting or where the light source is not "black body" Many may find the filter only needed for extreme situations, as I have, finding the profiles just fine. and that is simply a MAPPING not post processing. I read this and now will wait to see just where Leica and digital M's are in two years. My read on all this is they pushed a premature product out the door and have been back filling since then. With the coding requirements and filters, I see them moving more and more into closed system. I'll see what Leica has in 2008 at Photokina but until then will stick with and upgrade my Canons. But I'll still hang out here. I really want a digital M but just not this interation. Maybe I'll get my first Leica, a IIIG, fixed and go shot some film. I was on the verge of placing an order plus a 28 or 24mm lens and use my 30 year old Summricons which go nicley with my M6. Now I have heard all this I think I'll wait a while, buy some more film and treat myself to another couple of lens for my 1DsMII.
