peter_n Posted October 1, 2009 Share #21 Posted October 1, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) For those who have one, do you have the one with the quick-release or not? I'm somewhat leery of a design that encourages a quick release of the camera from the strap... But if it works well and is handy, I'd get one.I use both the straight strap and the swivel clip type and I've used a QR swivel clip Gripper on a big SLR for 16 years with no problems. The clips are metal and can scratch the camera/lens so if you worry about that kind of thing don't get one! You can get Canon branded Gripper straps really cheap on eBay, just enter Domke Canon into the search engine and you'll be able to buy two for $16. For those who haven't seen a Gripper strap I attach a detail below. The two gray stripes are rubber woven into the cotton strap. I'm also looking at the Pac-Safe strap but I think I'll stick with my Grippers for the time being. Welcome, dear visitor! dpattinson Posted October 1, 2009 Share #23 Posted October 1, 2009 . I'm also looking at the Pac-Safe strap but I think I'll stick with my Grippers for the time being. I tried a pacsafe strap for my plaubel makina, I wouldn't recommend it. The gripper pad is pretty poorly designed and the strap itself is too inflexible with the wires in it. Impossible to comfortably wrap around your wrist. IIRC the lowest part of the strap near the camera is not wired anyway - and that's where it's going to be cut if someone does cut it. I ended up with a thinktank strap for the plaubel, which grips well but is flexible enough to wrap around my wrist when I want.
holmes Posted October 1, 2009 Share #24 Posted October 1, 2009 I ordered via Amazon's party network a Leica 'wide' strap for 'Rs'.It came from another photo shop in NYC, in its Leica box, plastic wrap and brief instructions. That gave me the three I wanted for my three 'Rs". Then I noticed on Amazon the same seller had one more wide Leica strap. Wide meaning about 1.30 inches, and solid. Beautifully made with Leica marked on in several places. All three had that curly screw ring. The fourth strap I order showed up Thursday. It looks very much like yours. No where near the wide strap measurement, no Leica name anywhere, and the rings remind me of crab or lobster claws. I called the original seller in NYC and said, Hey this is not a Leica strap. It is no way near close to the one I had bought from them just several weeks before. The 'M' straps have Leica on the thick part of the neck, slip protecter. The "M" strap in width is just less than 1/2 inch. The wide strap is approximately 1 .25 inches wide. The M strap is 14 312 and the wide "R" is 14 235. The wide was specifically made for the 'R' series anticipating heavier cameras and lenses. OK to cut this short I told the NYC dealer that it was not a wide strap, in fact, not a Leica strap. ( Anybody want to sue the dealer, Leica?) The guy I talked to walked away from the phone for a couple of minutes, came back and told me they would give me full credit (79.99 USD) AND I did not even have to send the strap back! So my advice is to get the dealer, IF you cannot find the Leica name anywhere on the strap and say I want money back. I think they're doing the "old bait and switch" which is famous in NYC and elsewhere. I would not put that strap on my binoculars,I have an old Canon which work fine. By the way, I called Leica In NJ and was told by their head of repairs that Leica stopped making the wide 14 235 some time ago and they are cleaned out in the US and Germany. alun Posted October 2, 2009 Share #25 Posted October 2, 2009 Has anyone tried the Leica leather straps? They look rather nice Kenneth -- Do you mean these: http://en.leica-camera.com/photography/m_system/leica_a_la_carte/accessories/ I hadn't spotted them before -- they're part of the a la carte leather carrying case for a la carte MPs, according to Leica's own website, and do indeed look very nice! David thanks for the feedback on the Pacsafe, I've taken note of it.
