Neck Strap - Need Help

I have just received from ebay a "genuine" Leica neck strap for my beautiful new M4.

I am suspicious of this being "genuine" as it has no Leica brand or logo. However it looks like a decent strap but, to my shame, I cannot work out how to attach it to the camera. I have tried pushing and pulling on the sleeve around the ring but don't know which way it should go. Its very tight and I don't want to break it. Any advice would be most welcome.

Usually on a leica strap you pull the plastic sleeve up away from the metal ring. Then rotate the metal split ring until two 'horns' are exposed (in your picture they would be covered by the strap webbing. You feed one of the horns into the camera lug and rotate the split ring until it is secured, then pull the plastic sleeve down to prevent the ring from rotating again.

It looks like a binocular or scope neck strap. Albeit there is nothing to stop you hanging a camera from it if you wish

Actually, it's identical to the one that came with my R4. That doesn't have Leica branded on it anywhere either.

It's also the most uncomfortable neck strap I have ever used. The webbing is very hard and the spikes on the rubber section are "sharp".

There are lots of better straps out there. My current favourite is a Domke Gripper.

I love neck strap threads -- they're usually when this (and virtually very other photography forum) comes to life! Anyway, that aside, my vote goes to the standard nylon Leica strap (because they are what I have and they came with the cameras) but I have a sneaking admiration for Artist & Artisan (both the leather straps and the handwoven Japanese silk thingy). The standard Leica strapis also reasonably comfortable and does what it is supposed to do -- either around the neck or around the wrist....

I would second that. After all Leica supply it with thier cameras so we must assume they looked into the possibilities before commissioning it. I also like the way that the Leica name is black on black. Very reserved

If you can't figure out how to attach the thing to your camera, you can rest assured it's the genuine article. Don't lose the instructions--you'll need them again when it's time for it to come off (had to do that the other week when I sent a body in for service). That said, I like the standard Leica strap. They wear well, and I haven't had one slip off my shoulder yet.

The Domke Gripper is cheap enough that I might just get one sight-unseen (I'm looking for a replacement strap at the moment). For those who have one, do you have the one with the quick-release or not? I'm somewhat leery of a design that encourages a quick release of the camera from the strap... But if it works well and is handy, I'd get one.

The Gripper is a cotton strap with rubber woven into the weave, that, when the strap is on the shoulder the correct way round, grips the shirt shoulder like a limpet.

Mine has an "easy-on/easy-off" attachment to the camera body. It's not easy'd-off in my experience.

For twenty quid, it's expensive for what it is, but very good at what it does.

Chose the one WITHOUT quick-release, thought about theft and think it's easy enough to get it off...

Have fun with it!

My thoughts exactly - although this strap Pacsafe Anti-Theft Bags & Travel Security Products is interesting, particularly for travel in hostlie areas...

Ah, I've got one of those on my DSLR. Very good strap, tough, comfy enough and looks like it'll last. The internal wires do make it feel a little stiff sometimes but it's generally very good.
