chetccox Posted November 22, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 22, 2006 That is true, but unfortunately you can't read any faster from the card then what usb provides.

wattsy Posted November 22, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 22, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Then go to firewire. I prefer firewire (and have a firewire CF reader which I have timed to be significantly faster than a USB 2 equivalent) but I haven't been able to find a firewire SD card reader. Does anyone know of one available at the moment?

johnwolf Posted November 22, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted November 22, 2006 Good point about card speed. I didn't consider that. I think my SanDisk Extreme III read speed is only about 20 Mbps, so USB is fine. Certainly no need for SATA. Thanks everyone. John
carstenw Posted November 22, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 22, 2006 The new SanDisk readers are meant to be much faster than the older USB devices. I just bought a SanDisk ImageMate 5-in-1 reader, and I already have a Lexar Firewire CF reader, so I will be able to compare speeds when it arrives. SanDisk | Products | Accessories | ImageMate Reader/Writers I have never used a card reader before this. I was depending upon the usb connex from the D2 and then from a built-in reader on my Gateway Pentium-D. In order to make extra use of a Powerbook that I just acquired, I also bot a new Sandisk 12-in-1 reader -- HOLY COW are these things fast. It is easily more than 10 times faster than both of my previous methods. $40? Invaluable. Regards,
jackart Posted November 22, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 22, 2006 It is important to check, that You have USB 2.0 port on Your computer. USB 1.1 is 12 Mbps Firewire is 400 Mbps USB 2.0 is 480 Mbps Still, in real world, people tell that Firewire is some 15% faster copying number of small files. What is marginal difference indeed. carstenw Posted November 22, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 22, 2006 I have only seen one Firewire 800 card reader, and it was over $100. I don't recall where I saw it. The normal Firewire 400 readers are plenty fast. It takes just a few minutes to empty a SanDisk Extreme III card.
