tashley Posted November 22, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 22, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry in advance if this has been covered but I can't find it if it has... My understanding is that I need B+W 486 IR cut filters. My lenses are Elmarit f2.8 24mm asph (coded) E55 fit Summilux f1.4 50mm asph (coded) E46 fit Cosina Voigtlander f4.5 15mm super wide heliar asph. (no thread for filters and probably too wide for one to work anyway?) I can't make any sense of B+W's terrible website but as far as I can tell form UK dealers, neither of these sizes are made - or if they are, they're not available in the UK. Does anyone know whether these sizes are available and if so, from where? Will I need stepup/down adaptors? If so, what do I do about lens shades etc? Thanks in advance Tim

Gerard I recently ordered 5 filters from foto-huppert. Yesterday I received one of them (43mm for 40mm Nokton). The remainder, 39mm, 55mm, 60mm and 72mm (Canon 50mm 0.95) they say are expected to be delivered in December. Bob.

tashley Posted November 22, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted November 22, 2006 Thanks to all of you for your kind tips - I now have used Robert White for an order since no one seems to have these in stock, but if anyone knows of a secret stash please do let me know! Any views on the Tiffen filters equivalent? Tim
carstenw Posted November 22, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 22, 2006 Someone posted some shots made with a Tiffen, and the filter seems weaker than the B+W ones. I would hold out for a B+W. In fact, I am doing that

robsteve Posted November 22, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 22, 2006 Tim: Last week I posted a link to an ebay auction with the 55mm 486 filters. Although the seller has a few negative feedback, my 55mm and 49 filters arrived in the mail today, about a week from purchase date to ship from Germany to Canada. The auction number is 280038735017. It seems even that I posted this here last week, only Guy Mancuso and myself bought any from this store. They also seemed like a fair price, 69 Euro for the 55mm. I notice the auction ended with six left. You might try emailing them to see if they have any more. Robert
gurtch Posted November 22, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 22, 2006 Thanks Carsten. On your advice that's what I'll do though the wait is killing me! Tim It's possible to use 77mm filters on the CV 15. You need the clamp on filter holder for the CV 12mm lens. Put a small strip of black electrical tape on the CV 15mm lens' built in lens shade. After doing this the clamp on filter fits perfectly. The down side is that the push on lens cap will no longer fit. To cure this, remove part of the felt cap liner, and the cap will fit. Whether you can find 77mm IR filters is another manner. Although the seller has a few negative feedback, my 55mm and 49 filters arrived in the mail today, about a week from purchase date to ship from Germany to Canada. The auction number is 280038735017. Robert Hi Robert, thank you very much, I'll check it out! Which lens are you intending to use the 55mm on? I read in Sean's review part 4 that there's likely to be a cyan shift on anything under 28mm which may or may not get corrected in firmware later on. I was intending to use the filter on a 24mm f2.8 and now that seems like a less good idea until the Leica 'fix' is announced. Maybe I should just get a 46mm for my 50mm f1.4 for now! hammam Posted November 22, 2006 Share #11 Posted November 22, 2006 These things should be handled by Leica. These informations should be given by Leica. And the availability of the filters should be assured by Leica. I don't think they can just sit there and let us all sort this problem out on our own. I even think that you shouldn't order any filter for the moment, until Leica makes a clear annoucement as to what they intend to do with the particular issue of customers being forced to buy filters. Will they hand over vouchers for filters? Will they refund the costs of buying to the customers? Will they include several size filters which each M8 (I doubt it)? Etc... I am already looking for IR filters myself, but I won't order anything until Leica tells me what to do.

Tim It seems very likely that the cyan drift (486 filters) will be corrected in the M8 for all coded lenses. What will happen for uncoded lenses is still uncertain. My concern with the CV 15 is exactly that (the cyan drift). I would suspect that photographers who want to use that lens on the M8 may, depending on the subject matter, want to try Jamie's profile. Profiling around the problem is a compromise but it may be useful for some work. That will be what I do for that lens if I use it for color work. I would love to get my hands on 39 mm and 55 mm 486 filters, will follow the leads here. Cheers, Sean

Leica will be discussing all of this at some point in the (hopefully) near future but, in the meantime, some of us have work to do with these cameras so we're forging ahead on our own <G> I would agree that people shouldn't purchase any filters yet beyond the ones they absolutely need to use right now. robsteve Posted November 22, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 22, 2006 Sean: I don't think the 39mm filters have ever been made. Here is what the Canadian importer sent me after a very early inquiry on this November 8th. The funny thing is no sooner had he read my email looking for the 486 filter, a Leica dealer in Montreal called looking for them too. So for the Canadians on the board, 55mm should be available soon, but you will have to order them through your local camera shop. This is a quote from the Canadian B+W distributor in regards to my inquiry for 39mm, 55mm, and 60mm: "We will receive the 55mm size early/mid December and the rest in 'week 51', which means maybe/maybe just at the end of December, although with holiday closings freight and customs clearance could push it to early January. But we will get them for sure and we will have some quantity of each."

They were on the books in 39 mm size but I don't actually know how many, if any, had been made. In case, that will change. BTW, the end of Leica's two week period for an announcement is coming up soon. Cheers, Sean

That will be what I do for that lens if I use it for color work. Sean Sean, wether you shoot in b&w in-camera mode, or in color and then convert to b&w (using whatever method to do so), am I wrong in suspecting that the magenta aberration will also affect B&W pictures, since it is a much lighter shade than black. So, I suppose people wearing black clothes will show as wearing grey clothes. What do you think? Thanks.

Short answer is that, yes, it changes things but not necessarily for the worse. The fact is that I'm seeing a lot of questions on the forum that have been discussed in the review series but I'm hesitant to point that out because the trolls will argue that I'm just advertising the site. So, usually, I say nothing. Cheers, Sean

Dave I believe from what I've read that lenses wider than 28mm will show cyan corner shift with an IR filter, whatever size screw mount it's on. That's what Sean appeared to be saying, though I think the jury is out til Leica make their grand announcement
