marknorton Posted September 27, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Like history repeating itself, I had quite forgotten how ghastly the regulatory label on the base plate is. Why Leica could not put it on the inside as in a mobile phone, I have no idea. Anyway. mine came off last night. The clear plastic is easy to remove and so thin it will not last long anyway. To remove the label itself, spray on a liberal amount of label solvent available from people like Staples (I used an industrial version, Electrolube LRM from www.electrolube.com) and let it soak in. Then, using just your finger nail, work it off. You can then use the solvent to remove any last traces of goo and wash the baseplate, preferably without the camera attached , in warm soapy water and leave to dry. The paint finish is unharmed but I recommend that if you are going to do it, you do it soon so that there is no "shadow" from where the label has been. Lone Deranger Posted September 27, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 27, 2009 As soon as my Silver Grey M9 arrives that sucker is coming off. I just can't abide stickers on my equipment. I think I'll just use soapy water though as I don't trust any kind of solvent on a painted surface. It might look fine but who knows what it could do to the longevity of the paint. marknorton Posted September 27, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted September 27, 2009 Your choice of course but it looks absolutely fine to me. The key is to use the correct solvent; paint stripper will do just that. Label remover solvent is formulated to disolve the adhesive, the one I use contains a chemical d-Limonene which is a citrus extract - the solvent smells strongly of oranges - Limonene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I think you'll be scrubbing a long time with soap and water. As for the longevity of the paint, we expect it's going to be pants anyway so a few minutes exposure to this is hardly going to change things. Overgaard Posted September 27, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 27, 2009 I use "cleaning gazoline" as that always take off glue from any type of stickers, tape, etc. Start with tearing as much as you can with fingers (you can get quite a bit if not all), and then use gazoline for the remainding sticky glue; the liquid has to sink into it, after few minutes it is so soft you can wipe it off. Now, what it is called in your supermarket is a good question. But it's there with other cleaning liquids such as denatured alcohol and turpentine. jonoslack Posted September 27, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 27, 2009 Hmmm Well, I just peeled mine off - slowly and carefully, took about 2 minutes and it all came off. Am I doing something wrong?
marknorton Posted September 27, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted September 27, 2009 I think you must have got the beta-test label glue...

smb Posted September 27, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 27, 2009 This may sound gross. An old time furniture repairman demonstrated to me that human saliva is a great cleaning solvent on delicate and expensive surfaces. I would not try it on optical glass but it has worked well for me on camera bodies to remove glue residue.
Guest EarlBurrellPhoto Posted September 27, 2009 Share #9 Posted September 27, 2009 Geez! Tell me you didn't take off that label! It's like the one on the mattress...removing it is under penalty of law. I'd suggest packing up and going on the lamb ASAP.
gabriel Posted September 28, 2009 Share #10 Posted September 28, 2009 Try dabbing with a little light cooking oil and leaving to soak for 10 minutes or so. The label should come off and cooking oil cannot damage the paint like some solvents.
moikle Posted September 28, 2009 Share #11 Posted September 28, 2009 Cooking oil yes. Lightly sauté the label it never fails. Sorry I'll get my coat. Mike

I just take pictures with it, do not attend fashion shows.
