kenneth Posted September 27, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 27, 2009 I cannot see the need for any attachment on the shutter button of M cameras. I have M6's and assume the M7 shutter release button is the same. I shoot down to an eighth of a second hand held without any problem. It sounds to me like it is more of a holding the camera issue which might be the problem but there again I don't understand what your particular needs are or why you think one of these buttons would assist you to make better pictures. Can you go back to why you think you might need one?
rob_x2004 Posted September 27, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 27, 2009 With an M7 you probably dont need your finger on the shutter speed dial. On an MP my finger tip lives on the dial and I release the shutter with the inside of the first knuckle. I can do either independently, half depressing release to bring up the exposure meter. Two other things about using the first knuckle is that your grip is closer to the camera with your palm is snug to the body rather than the grip broken away, and secondly, if you press something with your fingertip you tend to pinch your thumb towards it as a result of a lifetime of picking things up. For long exposures you definitely dont want that. If I was given a soft release I would unscrew it and throw it in the bin.
chris roberts Posted September 27, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 27, 2009 I've used a soft release to good effect on an M4-P, M6 and M6TTL. However on my M7 there seems to be a different set-up within the shutter mechanism - probably to do with exposure locking with the 'first pressure point'. With a soft release attached, my shutter becomes 'notchy', which is the last thing you need when using slower speeds, so I've stopped using it on the M7. I believe this is not an uncommon issue with soft releases on this model.
MPerson Posted September 27, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 27, 2009 I was given two of these and tried them on my MP, M2 and CLs and I hated them. They are apt to act like a 'hair trigger' - especially on the MP when you have to go half way for metering. They can also trip the shutter when in a bag or moving them in and out of the bag. budrichard Posted September 27, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 27, 2009 Nothing. I have two M7's, neither have 'soft releases' which are just after market money makers for someone. As pointed out the shutter button on an M7 has different functions as its depressed and requires no additional mechanism to function as designed. I wish my Nikon Fm3a had that feature.-Dick

I will live without it there.
Woodrow Posted September 28, 2009 Share #9 Posted September 28, 2009 Maybe not the M7, but a mini-soft release was just what was needed for the CL, as the shutter button sits down low.Hunting for it increased likelihood of camera shake. There is noted improvement since adding it.
