Michael,

if you like to shoot landscapes, shores - all that traditional stuff, take a silver one, but in the crowd at Quincy Hall among tourists on the Freedom Trail, take the stealth - the black one.....;)

Cheers

Bernd

Aargh?!?!

Would you ask our advice on what suit to wear? Salad or vegetables? Steak or fish?

We don't know you from Adam. We have no basis for our "advice" except our own bias and prejudices. They are identical under the skin.

I bought a new watch recently; I had a choice of the same basic watch with two movements, and two styles. I made my choice while standing in the shop, without sacrificing a chicken to the internet. It's called "making your own mind up" Try it sometime - it's quite liberating.

Regards,

Bill

Surely the issue here is...

Where can I buy an M8.......

If said dealer has 2 M8s for sale its probably worth asking for some B+W 486 filters as in this utopia in which you clearly exist he will have shelves full of them in all sizes, some of which are supported and displayed on the shelves by being stood on piles M8 batteries. Should you be lucky enough to be standing in front of a dealer with a choice of 2 M8s to buy from my advice would be get the one that satisfies your eyes, and fills you with a sense of joy and well being when handled.

Make the most of this sensation as once you realise that you have a flawed jewel in your hand this sensation only returns periodically, the remainder of the time being filled with longing and desire for more batteries, 486 filters (none in the UK) and a posting in the Forum from Leica themselves announcing a fix, free filters, a shipment of batteries and Leica branded goodies for all the nice people who stumped up £3000 / $5000 for a beta release of their latest gem.

Actually it's not a stupid question.

I looked very closely at my black M8 and am sure the finish will not be as durable as my black M7... especially on the sharper edges which will be susceptible to rubbing and impact.

So, for durability, I'd suggest the chrome version.

While purists go on about that worn Leica in action look displaying the patina of use ... no one wants someone elses' patina when it comes time to sell it.

ok this guy could have read other post and make up his mind on his own.

BUT do you think you need to give him such sarcastical answers???

his question is likely not about color taste but more about which version will scratch easier, does the black finish ends up really ugly after a few years etc.

Hi,

I need advise on should i get a bloack M8 or Silver M8 ?

Hello Michael. Tough crowd tonight....!

Here's a thought. When you are spending this sort of money on a beautiful camera that you will be proud to own and use, do you want people to notice it a little bit? Probably. :) Some of the most fun moments I've had with my Leicas has been when other photographers or just passers by have noticed mine. I'm not one of these cloak and dagger street shooter types. Some of the best shots come from smiling at people, talking to them and then asking to take their photo. :D

So - the black one's look cool. Understated, simple, elegant and they match black lenses well. However, the silver chrome finished bodies are just gorgeous. Things of beauty. The chrome finish is quite extraordinary.

But give some thought to how you'll feel if it picks up some knocks and scrapes. This is inevitable if you use it a lot. Good - it'll look like a real one. Enjoy unwrapping it when it's new and then look forward to how it'll look in a few years after many memorable occasions and journeys.

Let us know what you order.

Rick.

Whatever your choice, you should get lenses of same color.

Now, I noticed that chrome lenses are heavier than black. It is surprising! You can check this out by downloading the technical specs of Leica lenses on

A Sfeir

Actually, there is no particular reason to get silver lenses for a silver camera. Black looks great too, and that is in fact my preferred combination. Black on silver looks classic to me, like blue jeans and a white t-shirt. Silver on silver I find a little funny, and silver lenses on a black camera... well, I have never seen anyone do that :)

I did have a thread very recently about the colour choice, and was asking about stealth. The conclusion was that several photographers *felt* stealthier with a black camera, but there were no anecdotes or proof that they actually were, and they freely admitted this.

Get the one which yanks your chain.

This is indeed surprising. I'm always surprised to read how many on this forum regard the 35 'Cron as compact and light. It is compact but I would never call mine light. Now I see the chrome one, that I've got, is 30% heavier than the black. Mmmn.

I am wondering about black and silver chrome finishes too, but for a different reason. I am allergic to nickel and read somewhere that there might be nickel underneath the silver chrome finish. If that is true and there is no nickel under black, I would go for the black finish. If it is underneath both, I would most likely opt for the one that is the most durable. I e-mailed Leica for assistance a month or so ago, but a Mr. Deiß replied that Leica does not advise on these issues. I asked again, but am still waiting for an answer.
