ptarmigan Posted September 25, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 25, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone up for this? I'm in Manchester the day before (at a Leica School) and am contemplating staying overnight. A morning or shooting, lunch, followed by maybe n afternoon session (or not). Any takers? stunsworth Posted September 26, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 26, 2009 I only live 12 miles or so outside of central Manchester, and at the moment I've nothing planned for the 18th, so I should be able to make this.

andybarton Posted September 27, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 27, 2009 Sorry. No can do. "Overseas" with Ivan Would have been up for it otherwise. I think that you guys should go and suss-out Ancoats and the Northern Quarter. We've not done that as a group yet. Have fun.
cocker Posted September 27, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 27, 2009 At them moment I'm free and would like to. Northern Quarter and Ancoats is a good idea. Mr T is the expert on Ancoats.
ptarmigan Posted September 27, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted September 27, 2009 And then there were three......... Here are some suggestions from stunsworth from another thread It depends what you want to photograph. It's a large city, so there's potential for street stuff. Also there's quite a large area of Victorian buildings between Victoria Station and Picadilly Station known as the Northern Quarter. Chinatown is just of Picadillly Gardens. Also nearby is the Gay Village - where the street sign for "Canal Street" often has the first letter of each word erased. There's a science and technology museum at the opposite end of Deansgate from Stephens with a large collection of trains and steam engines, there's also a small Aerospace museum next door. If you want to travel a bit out of the centre you can take the tram to Salford Quays where there's there's The Lowry - an arts centre and a permanent exhibition of painting by, well, Lowry. Just across the canal from The Lowry there's The Imperial War Museum of the North in a building designed by Daniel Libeskind. Just a few thoughts off the top of my head. Quite like the idea of getting to the Lowry at some point, Northern Quarter and China town. What time do we want to start?

elansprint72 Posted September 28, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 28, 2009 A word of caution before entering Ancoats/Islington: the best time is early morning before the local population is awake and looking to score its fix money. Do not take a wallet just have fifteen quid in your pocket. Do not wear a fancy watch or nifty leather jacket, no Foggy Bellingham bags . You should be OK with rangefinders because the scrotes will think they are just "old shit" with no cash value. I'm planning an expedition there in the not too distant; aim is to revisit the Life on Mars Ancoats file (a series currently in preparation). Anyone wanting to ride shotgun will be more than welcome, particularly if they actually bring a shotgun. Sorry I can't make it on the 18th, be careful out there. stunsworth Posted September 28, 2009 Share #9 Posted September 28, 2009 What time do we want to start? How about meeting in the morning for a coffee - say 10 am, wandering around though the centre of town up by the Northern Quarter, then something to eat for lunch. Since the Lowry is in my general direction home I could then drive us to the Lowry for a mooch around. After that you could get the tram back into central Manchester while I drive home. Just an initial thought, and I'm open to changes to the times and locations.

cocker Posted September 28, 2009 Share #12 Posted September 28, 2009 Oddly enough, that's not how Urban Splash seem to see the area. I've always thought of Bloxham as rather "other-worldy". Probably inhaled too much of the air in Affleks Palace

Falstaff Posted September 28, 2009 Share #14 Posted September 28, 2009 Ian I know these reprobates , don’t plan on doing anything after lunch – but that’s part of the fun. However, you will enjoy your day. Falstaff

cocker Posted October 16, 2009 Share #18 Posted October 16, 2009 Hi Ian & Steve, I'm afraid I don't think I will be able to make it on Sunday. We have a dinner in Shropshire on Saturday night and we have decided to stay over with friends so we can both have a drink so I'm not going to be back in time. Hope you have a great day and the weather is good. Best wishes

Here is how it was- http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/landscape-travel/100331-life-mars-continued.html The Leica is noted as the camera of choice (as I understand it) for war correspondents so you should be suitably equipped! I spent 3 years at Manchester Univ. and loved the place.....why not go to the University Campus ...its huge and should give some interesting shots. Also the Whitworth Park off Oxford Street not far from the main university buildings should give more material.....Good Luck!
