bill Posted November 21, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 21, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) The fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square has been empty for most of its' history. The debate about what to put on it has gone on for over a hundred and fifty years. Now there is a commissioning project that uses the plinth as a platform, in the truest sense, for today's sculptors. Fourth Plinth for more details. "Alison Lapper Pregnant" by Marc Quinn, is the most recent occupant. I found the juxtaposition of a modern sculpture of a nude pregnant woman with no limbs with the classical "heroic" representation of Admiral Lord Nelson, who lost a limb and an eye in the service of his country to be strangely representative of how our perceptions have shifted in 160-odd years. Advertisement Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Hi bill, Take a look here Alison and Nelson . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ejd Posted November 21, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 21, 2006 I think that pigeon perched on her head makes this one. It echoes Nelson's cocked hat. I received a mailing from the society of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists the other day ( a pack of Christmas cards and other things), and notice that one of their artists is Alison Lapper, who is a mouth painter. bill Posted November 22, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted November 22, 2006 Thanks John, I'd like to tell the tale that I waited all day for the pigeons to co-operate, but I'd be lying! Regards, Bill
