Alison and Nelson

The fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square has been empty for most of its' history. The debate about what to put on it has gone on for over a hundred and fifty years. Now there is a commissioning project that uses the plinth as a platform, in the truest sense, for today's sculptors. Fourth Plinth for more details.

"Alison Lapper Pregnant" by Marc Quinn, is the most recent occupant. I found the juxtaposition of a modern sculpture of a nude pregnant woman with no limbs with the classical "heroic" representation of Admiral Lord Nelson, who lost a limb and an eye in the service of his country to be strangely representative of how our perceptions have shifted in 160-odd years.

I think that pigeon perched on her head makes this one. It echoes Nelson's cocked hat.

I received a mailing from the society of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists the other day ( a pack of Christmas cards and other things), and notice that one of their artists is Alison Lapper, who is a mouth painter.
