It must date to about 1960. It was originally an optical design for the 1959 Canonflex, but was soon brought out in a screw-thread version for the Canon rangefinder cameras. If it fits your M camera, it must be fitted with a M-bayonet adapter ring. This sort of thing was often done.

I have once characterised that lens as "the world's most expensive ashtray" and I do stand by that evaluation -- unless Fabergé produced something even more expensive for the Tsar of all Russias, of course.

:D

that made me chuckle

you guys are really superb in your knowledge and helpfulness.

I'm still playing with my SL but film is odd.

I'm sure that just as i get the hang of it, 35mm will be discontinued.

Actually,

The OP's query was about the Canon RF 1.8/85mm lens - that, along with the 2/100mm are superb lenses. Maybe not at par with the Summicrons but a great lens never-the-less.

During my Canon RF collecting days I occasionally used the 3.5/19mm, 3.5/25mm, 1.8/50mm, 1.8/85mm and the 2/100mm on an M6 - the slides were great. Still have the 3.5/25mm and use it on the M8 - the lens extends less than 25mm and makes the M8 into an almost pocketable camera.

The 0.95/50mm Canon lens did indeed posess certain qualities..... Unfortunately, sharpness and contrast were not among them......;)

Best,

Jan
