IIRC, when Leica bought the M8's Kodak sensors, they explained that they weren't restricting sales. That is, although Kodak and Leica had developed the sensor specifically for the M8, Kodak was now free to sell it to anyone. In the Reichmann interview, I believe Stefan said that the M9 sensor was proprietary. If so, then Kodak is producing only for Leica, and Leica would need to pay for that privilege. (Keeping this sensor unavailable to others sounds to me like a good business move.) Howard, I can well imagine that Leica would be very keen to keep this sensor out of the hands of Zeiss/Cosina/Epson. There is still a vague rumour floating around that Nikon is thinking of an M mount DRF but the suggested specs had a much lower pixel count, lower even than an M8.
