ho_co Posted September 15, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 15, 2009 gary-- There are several forum members who have visited the plant, and I think they've published some pictures here. Very modern facility, of course. The workers have the same pride of being associated with the Leica name as do the Solmsianer. They have also come up with a number of innovations that have later been picked up by Germany. You might try a forum search.

stunsworth Posted September 16, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 16, 2009 In case of any dust on the M9's sensor, now we know where it comes from But they clean the dust off the sensor before the camera leaves the factory - you can see the process below. martinis Posted September 16, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 16, 2009 Now now ,don't be harsh on Britain's oldest ally.Maybe Gordon Brown could give Leica some money for a UK factory given the unemployment figures today .
RockyIII Posted September 16, 2009 Share #9 Posted September 16, 2009 Just curious, which cameras and/or lenses does Leica manufacture in Portugal? Rocky
stunsworth Posted September 16, 2009 Share #10 Posted September 16, 2009 Just curious, which cameras and/or lenses does Leica manufacture in Portugal? The basic bodies assemblies for the M series are fabricated in Portugal and are then sent to Germany for final assembly - which in the case of the M8/9 involves fitting the sensor, adjusting the rangefinder, making sure everything is in tolerance and working ok - probably also a lot of stuff I haven't mentioned. The basic assembly of the R series also used to be done in Portugal before the range was dropped. As far as I know all the lenses are made in Germany. ho_co Posted September 17, 2009 Share #11 Posted September 17, 2009 Also at one time, binoculars were made in Portugal. Don't know about today. I think Steve is right about lenses. Portugal's forte is mechanical, not optical assembly.

georg Posted September 19, 2009 Share #16 Posted September 19, 2009 How is the average wage for the workers? Are they trained in-house (for weeks? or like in Germany 3- 3 1/2 years?). I'm surprised to hear about SMD-placement-machines - they told me the circuit boards are made elsewhere (at least for M8/9 and S2). It's also a little bit confusing to read about machining of lens-elements and barrels. The barrels for the lenses are made by Weller (I think they're already in the Leitz-park) while the elements are made in Solms. Was it production for projection lenses/sportoptics (I think they were made in Portugal)?
