mat_mcdermott Posted October 6, 2009 Share #41 Posted October 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ron, there does seem to be something different going on in terms of sound, no doubt about that. But from that test I wouldn't say that one is practically slower than the other. We're talking such small amounts of time that you need to measure it to know what the difference is. And frankly it's so slight that it could easily be (not saying that you're doing this, but just hypothetically) that you heard a difference once on the M9 and are pushing the release slightly differently. I'm not sure it will produce different results, but why not take user control out of it and put the cameras on self-timer on a tripod?

Well I did hear a different sound in Ron's first test but it was hard to isolate the first click/clunk from the opening and closing of the shutter. That is why I suggested to do a test on B without discreet. That way you can totally isolate the first sounds, whatever first click/clunk and the opening of the shutter, form all the rest. I think the rewind noise is recognizable for what it is, yes? Ron, there does seem to be something different going on in terms of sound, no doubt about that. Remember that something is making the sound. The louder of the 2 clicks is the shutter firing(moving). It's really not that small of an amount of time. The M9 feels sluggish because it IS sluggish to fire. Someone else try a side by side. Please?!?!? -Ron
rondeb Posted October 6, 2009 Share #44 Posted October 6, 2009 I've posted a video side by side of the M8.2 and M9 with timer setting. Both cameras are @1/1000th s. The video is reeeeaaallly bad - sorry. Just used my handy iPhone for a quick grab. In this timer setting, the difference seems to be less than when firing in single mode. Shootist Posted October 6, 2009 Share #45 Posted October 6, 2009 In most of the exposures I couldn't tell the difference, except one that I think you hit the M9 release after the M8. Please do and record the B setting test and post that. I am thinking about rushing out to buy a M9 (that is if I can find one(local shops have said they are getting them)) and don't want to run into this. mat_mcdermott Posted October 6, 2009 Share #46 Posted October 6, 2009 Someone else try a side by side. Please?!?!? -Ron This is one of those things that we could just put to rest if more of us actually had the camera and Solms wasn't so backlogged in producing them. Even if shops had demos.... Anybody know if someone in NYC actually has one right now?

Yeah, I couldn't tell the difference either. Nor could actually hear the difference, which I did with just the audio.

I will record the B setting shortly - though to my ear sounds the same as my 1st recording. -Ron
mat_mcdermott Posted October 7, 2009 Share #49 Posted October 7, 2009 Was referring to shops so I could test another M9 and draw my own conclusions and possibly compare to what you've found.
