Am I insane?

As just stated in another thread, I'm going to go with the M8.2 as my first Leica RF... if you are in the same situation as me (which it sounds like) and have never really worked with this equipment, I think the emphasis is on the Lenses...

To me, the mystique of shooting Leica is the actual 'shooting' process - using Rangefinder, working manually... in the end, if you show your pictures to a (unsuspecting) audience I think you'll rarely get comments like: "Oh - look at that detail, it must have been a Canon 5DMk2" or "look at that bokeh - definetely Leica"... you will (hopefully) hear compliments however and remember the fun you had taking those pictures in the first place - and for that matter, it doesn't make a difference if you get the M8(.2) or the M9...

On top of that, the current pricing difference between M8 and M9 would allow you to 'upgrade' to a Lux lense instead of a Cron or get an additional Summarit to give you more choice when you are taking pictures. This you will have regardless of Body...

Personally (even though I don't have the camera yet) I feel very confident in this decision... and I'm usually 'Mr. Latest Gadget' personified... but then this isn't a Gadget and so this is the first time I didn't go with the latest and greatest...

Off course, your milage may vary

Ciao

Marco

Well, if 'plasticman' is right about colour from the M9, then that is a HUGE point imo. The tones and colour are very special from the M8 and the reason i love it.

If the colours from the M9 are more digital looking, then the M8 is a far superior camera in my mind and any niggling desires for the M9 put to bed for me. :D

As I just said over on the M9 forum - try it for yourself. No substitute for that - you may prefer the M9 files.

Hi Ian;

Just my own feeling, purely emotional. (Which figures heavily into the purchase of a lot of Leica gear, I imagine.) A used or demo M8 is around half the cost of the M9, which would make it an easier entry into Leica digital, don't you think?

I've had my M8 for 2 years, use it professionally every day, and am very pleased with it. I've had no trouble with mine, and don't mind the IR filters. In fact, I use the CV 15 and a 135 Elmar without filters and seldom have any problem.

My second camera is a Digilux 2, which is an excellent complement to the M8, having the pop-up flash, live view, and zoom. I shoot everything RAW, and am always pleased with the result.

I imagine I'll get the M9 someday, but only after its been around awhile and the price drops more in my reach.

Best, David

JD,

I in a similar boat: I was saving for a 21 'lux. Now, I've put my backup M8 up for sale (here and on ebay), and am (still) saving for an M9. The M9 arrival will be at about the same time the 21 'lux would have arrived.

I played with one at the Leica announcement on 9/9/9 and suggest you run, do not walk, to acquire this camera (just like I am running...).

It's actually a hair lighter, feels smaller tho it's a tad taller in the middle, and has a shutter that is more silent than the M8.2.

Go for it.

...and has a shutter that is more silent than the M8.2.

As I've noted in another thread, my M8.2 shutter (and motor) was slightly quieter than the demo M9 I handled in my local store (according to me, dealer, Leica rep and others). This may have been just sample variation, since I believe they're the same shutters. Just my experience...and, the difference was so small as to be irrelevant in the real world.

Also, the M9 did not seem smaller than my M8.2...M9 maybe a hair bigger...on this, sample variation doesn't apply. And again, for all practical purposes, the same.

The overall dimensions are exactly the same, and as for weight I understand the M9 is 589grams as opposed to 591grams for the M8. So one hair is probably exactly right when describing how much lighter the new camera is. :)

Still if you're desperate for reasons to buy the M9 - think how heavy that hair would feel if you had to carry it around all day! This is precisely why some men prefer being bald.

According to specs on Leica site, M9 is 585g, with battery. And, specs formerly listed on site for M8.2 showed 545g, without battery. Since the battery adds 34g (1.2 ounces), the M8.2 with battery is 579g.

Yikes, Bill will have to lug around a heavier camera.

I listened to shutter sounds from both the M8.2 and the M9 at the Big Leica Shindig and the M9 sounded quieter to me. Stephan Daniel told me that the shutter in the M9 is a new shutter, and agreed with me that it is quieter. Maybe it's only a little quieter, but I thot I heard a difference.

I feel like a 2-year-old. I want the end of the year to come, so I can have the stupid camera. Just imagine all the mistakes my assistant can make by then.

It's okay - I checked with Bill's barber and he's having two hairs cut off on saturday - so it's a zero-sum game again!

Still - way to go Bill! All good reasons to pay 7000 bucks for a new camera! :)

Actually, it's the same hair, but it's being split in two. You had the right idea.

I probably have fewer hairs than you to split. Use and enjoy your new camera, as we all should ours...it's all about the pictures. And, whatever gets you there, or why, is strictly personal. Actually, I hope there are tons more like you...more profits and longevity for Leica, and cheaper M8.2s for others.

Since I was saving for a 21 'lux, and am deferring (?) that purchase for the M8, their profits won't change substantially as a result of my purchase.

My M8 is in the used market, however, tho it's not an M8.2. Since the M8.x line is discontinued, one wonders if the 8.2 will appreciate relative to the 8.

I totally agree and I hope everyone (including Bill naturally) realized that I was just having fun. No-one needs to justify their buying decisions in any way, and I'm sure Bill is gonna love his M9 - hair or no hair. ;)

As for the shutter sound, I thought it was the quietest M-shutter I ever heard - and I used to own an M7!

I just watched the Stefan Daniel interview video posted on Luminous Landscape and discussed on other threads here, and at the very end of the video, he says that the M9 shutter is not only the same as the M8.2, but it's the same shutter as in the the R8, which made it into the M8! Very interesting, and you can hear David Farkas expressing surprise.
