M8 viewfinder - Can any user tell me if it's possible to see the frameline selected by a 35mm lens when using the Leica 1.25x viewfinder magnifier and wearing spectacles? My eyesight is less good than it used to be and I want to have a larger rangefinder image to aid focusing - a fairly simple requirement. But, I live 150 miles from my nearest dealer who can't actually tell me if this can be done, nor can Leica Camera UK. I guess none of ther staff actually wear specs. Nor can I get one sent on sale or return. Given the astronomically high cost, I'm relectant to buy without knowing whether it will actually let me do what I want, i.e let me see the 35mm-selected frame lines with my glasses in place. It seems the Leica device is the only one with a rubberised eyepiece - and scratching my hideously expensive varifocal lenses is something I also want to avoid. Guidance from experience will be very welcome.

john_newell Posted September 13, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 13, 2009 YMMV but I can't. I use a diopter on the magnifier to avoid the problem. Re. Jeff S Posted September 13, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 13, 2009 Tim Isaac has eyecup/magnifiers for Leica, including different magnifications and different diameter cups. His products are reliable and well known on the forum, especially his "Thumbs-Up." And, the magnifiers are much less costly than Leica's. While you can order from him directly, it's probably easier to go through either Tony Rose at Popflash or David Farkas at Dale photo. I think either dealer will send you one to try, with return if not acceptable (ask to be sure). Here's a link to his mags...match Technical Services - E-Clypse EyeCup MAG FWIW, I have the Leica 1.25, but don't like the fact that the rubber ring on the eyepiece keeps coming off, despite the high price. I researched Tim's products, but since I don't use the magnifier much anymore, I decided to stick with what I have for now. On the M8.2, I can see the 35 lines with my glasses and 1.25, but I would never use a mag for this focal length...the framelines are perfect for me as is. Jeff PS I just noticed you're in UK. I don't know what dealer might carry Tim's products there. But, the 2 US dealers I mention certainly do mail business everywhere.

The BAD news: it’s really cumbersome to take on and off the magnifier because every time you have to unscrew the diopter as well. Unfortunately Leica does not provide a solution that enables the diopter to stay at the body and the magnifier to be screwed upon it. scsambrook Posted September 13, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted September 13, 2009 Thanks to everyone for their helpful input. My eyeglasses prescripton is quite strong (-9d right eye + strong astigmatism) and removing my specs and using a (custom made) correction lens simply isn't practicable. Contact lenses seemed an alternative but I just can't get on with them. .
