Hi Andy,

The one year warranty is I suppose worth something and in this case 350$US as for the repair it sounds like a problem the M8 has had rather than something I did!

Terry;

Is it the new shutter, or the older 1/8000 one that they had a spare of and put back in?

If you read Terry's posts there was nothing wrong with the shutter. The problem was with the electronics that control the shutter.

Leica will not be replacing the old type shutter with the new type for $350. Even if it was under warranty and the shutter had failed. this happened to another forum member and Leica charged that member the full cost of the new shutter under the upgrade program. Which I found totally ridiculous. Allowing Leica to renege on the original warranty.

Hi Andy,

If I could wind back the clock it might be a different story. In some perverse way your experience makes me feel better - I questioned whether it was something I had done to cause the problem. I can stop that now:).

Terry it was nothing you did. It is a camera electronic and or firmware problem that Leica should of repaired free of charge. Even the M9 has had this run on problem and that is only 3 weeks old.

Saving grace is now you have a one year warranty where as if they did it for free there wouldn't be a warranty given.

So in the end I really believe you came out ahead.

Now lets see what the next person pays to have this same problem fixed. It will happen again to someone. Hopefully not me.

The M8 I have left, sold the other one, was new to me 5/07 as a replacement for the original I had and has been back to Leica NJ twice for repairs under warranty. Once for the turn on problem, where the camera would not turn on fully unless you hit the shutter release (Like it went directly into sleep mode when you turned the switch on), and the second time to replace the sensor because of the line. Hopefully Leica updated this camera to the newest electronics during one of those repairs.

Greeting,

The camera is back in Vancouver and I will pick it up tomorrow. I will accept the One Year Warranty for $350 and move on, not happily and will take the opportunity as it arises to let future M8 owners in my world know this might be a problem for them.

I was surprised to lean that the M9 has exhibited this same problem.

Best regards, Terry.

No this is a classic M8 - the shutter is fine - it is the supporting electronics (as it was described to me) that have failed - and I am hearing this is a common problem with the M8, but certainly not being acknowledged by Leica NJ and I am don't know if Leica AG is fixing the issue for no charge as it arises. The good news is the quick turn around and a One Year Warranty which eases the pain of paying 350US dollars.

Best regards, Terry.

Yeah, I wondered; if the "old 1/8000" shutter was as unreliable as some people on this forum think, I would have thought that Leica would have quietly upgraded it for Terry, rather than possibly have it fail within the warranty period and have to handle it all again.

Thanks all for clearing that up.

I have the camera back, the invoice does not really indicate what was repaired in much detail.

'Repair Shutter Mechanism',

'Adjust Shutter Speeds To Tolerance',

'Upgrade To Current Standard',

'Check And Adjust for Good Working Order'

Total cost in Canadian Dollars $381.50. A total of 12 business days from dealer to NJ and back.

Best regards. Terry.

The main thing there, Terry, IMO, is "upgrade to current standard."

If you still had the old electronics, you've now got the latest version that the M8s were sold with.

Glad it's back, and relatively quickly as well! I think NJ is doing a better job these days in both quality and quick turnaround.

Greetings,

I was being a little smug about how my M8s, after pretty close to three years, have been operating without any serious problems. Unfortunately today ended that! I was on assignment - fortunately I had two M8 bodies as I usually do. It was strange - I fired the first three frames no problem - then it went into continuous motor mode - motor was winding/turning but the shutter wasn't opening and closing. I had to take the battery out to get it to stop. I returned the battery to the camera and I could get one shot off and then it would start doing the same thing.

I was using freshly charged batteries.... My other M8 (which has been in for a minor service worked flawlessly). I am not ready to write off the M8 just yet - they have been stellar performers for me with quality output.

For tertiary backup I keep an M6 handy, I didn't load it up after all, but it was comforting to know it was there.....

I dropped it off at my local dealer and it will makes it way to NJ sometime next week.

Best regards to all. Terry.

Terry,

I had that problem in SF last April. The camera was in "Mormal" mode (not "Discreet"). Replacing batteries won't help. As soon as I turned the camera on, the motor tried to recock the shutter (but actually the shutter didn't move, I just heard the sound of the motor) and I had a message on the LCD "Shutter fault". I tried to reset the camera at least 15 times, but the problems was still there. If I didn't turned off the camera using the top switch, the motor was still working even with the base plate removed!

I sent an email to Solms and they proposed me to collect the camera and send it to NJ. But as it was the end of my trip, they organize to pick up my M8 back at my home in Paris.

Three days later, in Paris, the camera was working properly. I called Solms to inform them. I told them everything was back to normal and they could cancel the order to pick up my camera. They said they wanted to examine the camera, so they collect my camera two days later as previously arranged.

After staying in Solms for about three weeks, they couldn't find any problem with the camera. They returned me the camera as before (they did nothing because nothing was wrong)... and three days later, I had again exactly the same problem!

They picked up the camera a second time and, this time, they sent the camera to the factory (not to the Customer Service) for extensive control. A week later, on the service order, they said they couldn't repeat the problem but they had replaced the "shutter chariot". I called them to know what they had done exactly (new shutter, maybe?) and they explained me it's a part of the shutter which was defective from origine.

When I got the camera back, everything worked perfect for two weeks... until I was on holidays in the South of France end of June. The camera started to behave errotically: shutter half opened, camera locks...

I called them back, they picked up my camera one more and they replaced it.

No problems (for the moment) with the new one... I keep my fingers crossed! :)

Cheers,

.
