I had the opportunity to take some photos with the M9, which made me quite sure that it is the best M digital ever.

Really love the light, feeling of this BW photo.

Well are those shots taken using the JPG B&W option of the M9. I don't see what is so special about it. But then we must justify the $7000 we are about to spend.

These were shot with a M8 which was the first digital M and not a bad camera. But of course these shots were taken in color and then converted to B&W using NIKs Silver Efex Pro.

I haven't used the JPG image capture option on any camera other then a P&S in years.

Okay, I should already know this but what's the advantage of shooting B&W, rather than converting in PP?

A related question, if one's forced to shoot at high ISO would there be a noise advantage to shooting in B&W, as opposed to converting a noisy image to greyscale in PP?

thanks

There is none. To shot B&W straight out of the camera you have to use JPG as the image/file format. This limits you to what you can do with the image/file and it is smaller, by at least half, what the DNG file is. That means there is less infomation in the file. And you do not get the option of having a color image/file just incase you like the color image, of course you can shoot JPG B&W+DNG at the same time. But that uses up more card and disk space.

Oh and you are letting the camera decide how & what way to process the image into B&W.

I like to make that decision.

One thing I'd like back in the firmware would be the option of displaying the DNG files in B&W. In early FW version of the M8 the embedded jpg used for the LCD would assume the setting made for Color Saturation in the Menu. The only way for me to shoot DNGs and review in B&W is to switch on DNG + JPG, which slows things down and makes me have to pick through the list of files when copying from the card to my computer, since I don't want the in-camera JPGs. For some reason I find it easier to assess a shot if it's B&W, even if later I change my mind and use it in colour.

By the way, it's embarrassing to see someone post up a photo and get savaged.

Chris
