Sandisk SD card speeds in M9

hmmm, i dunno what to say then.

I am attending another Leica event this afternoon. I will bring my Sandisk 1gig Ultra II standard SD cards (9megs per sec) to test then.

the M9 still isn't as fast as I'd like it to be (at least not with Extreme III SDHC cards) so any speedup potential has my interest!

Thanks. Can you test to see how long the image takes to show up when zooming after just a single shot?

I shot exclusively with Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 6 cards for my M9 test. Writing the larger, uncompressed DNGs on the M9 felt faster than the smaller, compressed DNGs on my M8.2. I didn't shoot to the buffer, just becuase that is not how I shoot, but even the "slow" cards on the list feel very quick.

Just my 2c.

Spoke with Leica Info Service Solms on the phone, and they do explicitly recommend using the fastest cards available (despite what's in the FAQ), so maybe a sign of fixes in future firmware?

Unfortunately, they could not tell me the fastest read/write speed of the camera's digital intestinals... :(

Best regards,

Michael

The engineer at Leica who is recommending the Ultra II cards is *very much* in a position to know what works well in an M9. The recommendation might change in the future but his advice is worth listening to.(...)

Agreed to that Sean (very good review on your site, btw), but as I have to buy SD cards now, I'd like to be both cost efficient and future proof, meaning I'd hate to buy slower but cheaper cards now and then seeing the M9 outperforming them soon with new firmware...

Maybe you can try to dig something up there, leveraging your excellent contacts?

Thanks and best regards,

Michael

I just got back from a Leica event handling the M9 for the second time. Unforutnately this time it was much more crowded so I didn't get much time with the camera.

I tried shooting compressed DNG only using my 1gig Sandisk UltraII standard SD (NOT SDHC) that's 9meg per sec.

it felt MUCH slower (sorry don;t have an exact time) than using my 8gig Extreme III SDHC card.

So without being able to time them, I don't think this really answers our question...... :(

I've already had those conversations and that's where the Ultra II advice came from. The review was revised yesterday with more detail about speed in RAW but the advice from M9 engineering folks is to use the Ultra II.

Cheers,

Sean, I believe mby's question for Leica was whether the slow performance of the new (and supposedly faster) cards is going to get fixed with a future firmware update or whether it is an inherent restriction of the M9 hardware and we all better stay away from these cards. I would like to know the answer as well.

Thanks. And thanks for the excellent review. Can't wait for more.

I hate to push you, but if you had to buy some new cards for yourself, would you buy the Ultra II or Extreme III? Obviously the former are cheaper and work better now, but I'd hate to spend the cash and end up with a slower card if improvements are made down the road.

Hi Noah,

I personally end up using the Ultra II cards primarily and I already have a ton of them so that's what I'm using for my own work with the M9. I'm not qualified, though, to tell you if that's the best decision long term because this isn't really my area of expertise. As you probably know, I'm not a tech guy per se.

Cheers,

Sean

Thanks sean, I appreciate the honest reply. I'd love to buy some ultra II cards since they're cheaper, but hate to be stuck with slower cards if future firmware updates improve data transfer and make the Extreme III cards faster.
