sandymc Posted September 9, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks to Joakim (MMX_2), here's a quick analysis of what's in the M9 compressed DNG: 1. 14 bit, not 16 bit, in case anyone was still wondering. 2. The compressed DNG indeed uses exactly the same 8-bit compression as the M8 3. The sensor does NOT have the same color response as the M8 sensor - the calibration matrixes are different - this is consistent with Leica's comment that the dyes used in the filter array are different. AKA, M8 profiles will not work on the M9 4. The MakerNote is a lot bigger than the M8, and seems to be different, but haven't had time to look at that in detail. 5. DNG version is still 1.0.0.0, which is good news for compatibility; Phase One should have no trouble updating C1 to deal with the M9. Sandy Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Is this not the case? Jamie, Unfortunately, "color depth" and similar terms are a bit of a classic piece of "marketing indirection". Is this not the case? Not the case, apparently. That didn't make any sense to me (or to Sandy) when it appeared in some market-speak in the brochure. The more sensible expectation, once they said you could have pure, uncompressed DNG, or compressed to half the volume, was that they had listened to the M8 user complaints about enforced compression. And give us what we asked for, whether we need it or not. Personally, I think I will turn off uncompressed unless there is an obvious need for it. scott PS, sandy types faster than I do.
