Probably as many I will have to rethink my initial thought towards a no-buy to a probable buy.... these marketing events really have their effect you know.... I'm itching to phone my dealer and order my "fix" being the M9 and the X1. I want the X1 more than the M9... or shall I say wanted.... The £4850 includes VAT, the $7000 does not include sales tax. $7000 = AFAIK, it's $7000 + local sales tax in the US. Even if you can avoid that, $7000 is £4228.05, tax exclusive price in the UK is £4217, so similar. You can also buy in Delaware (and three other states) where there is no sales tax. I also did the calculation once prices started to appear. If you remove VAT, the Euro, GBP and dollar prices seem to be the same (at today's rates). Doubtless arbitrage opportunities will appear in time. Maybe the far east is one example. I am seeing a rough £2000 price difference between M8 (what I paid in July) and M9 (today's price) and that is substantial given the actual difference in specification. It seems that Leica has however convinced some people that they need to pay for a "Perceived" level of quality, pride of ownership, bragging rights etc. Judging by the various threads here there are people that have a lust to own the M9 that seems to me at least to go beyond simply taking photos.......I also love all that is Leica and have been an affectionado since 30 years but I have just two questions: 1 Will Leica provide firmware upgrades to M8 that address some of the M9 added features? 2 How is all this going to translate positively into the P&L of Leica in 2009 and 2010? On this day of happiness for all Leica fans it would be inappropriate and churlish I guess to ask such questions but the forum is a tough environment!
