The service isn't good, but the price will be more or less the best in Australia. But I didn't tell you that. The two other Leica dealers in Adelaide (PhotoCo Camera House & Twin City Camera House) will price their stock more sensibly, but they'll look after you better, too. Vanbar in Sydney does not have anything, everything comes from Melbourne. I expect Foto Reisel will be the only store in Sydney that will actually have an M9 to demo. I was reasonably in the market at $9000AUD or so, since this would be about the exchange cost of the US price plus GST. But at $12,000AUD, I will order one from the states, have it sent to my parents and have a friend bring it back with them. $7000USD is only about $8200AUD at todays exchange rate, heck, I would even be happy to pay GST on the amount, still saving $3000AUD! PLM, my first port of call will be Camera Exchange, second will be Camera Lane. I'm on both lists but they are talking AUD$11000. At that rate I'm on a plane to New York! I would be searching and bargaining for a sharper deal (even though it is unlikely to happen for a few months in my case). I did see somewhere that an Auckland dealer has it down for around NZD11,000 which would translate into a far more attractive proposition for Australians. We probably need to kick back for a few days or longer and see where it all falls after the 'market' opens. There are a certainly many people who can and will pay the RRP (and I am happy for them) however I cannot pretend to be in such a position loksi, that is interesting. I will keep a keen eye on our Kiwi Brothers. NZ travel is a 'pinch' from here. However, the NY idea is more attractive, IF you can cope with that shocking flight over the Pacific. You do need to allow for the customs fees plus postage and insurance and GST on everything though. The sums look like this (for importing the camera yourself): (round figure for example and assume .82 exchange rate) USD 7000 = AUD 8537+Customs duty 5%=AUD 8963+ transport and insurance say AUD 150 (guess)=AUD 9113+ GST 10%= AUD 10025. Customs agent's fee would be additional. Our higher exchange rate currently does make the US prices more attractive, for sure. Leicas prices are pretty variable hereabouts. Your right Geoff, but I was considering flying there return and getting the trip as 'value added' so some of those cost would 'melt away'. Haven't you ever heard of rationalization? A downscaled real M are to expensive to manufacture, THis one gives you Leica glass, it cheap compared to a real M, but that comes at a price (reduced sensor and unchangeable lenses) And it is more than twice the price of an Olympus Pen which allows you to use Leica glass, and three times the price of a Canon G11.
