Will LR2.4 develop M9 dng?

I can't imagine M9 DNGs won't work with the existing Lightroom; after all, Leica probably hasn't bought the versions of Lightroom they're shipping with the camera in a store in Solms. There quite likely has been extensive dealings between Leica and Adobe prior to launch. JB

I think the brochure said that Lightroom could be downloaded from Adobe, which probably means they just ship a serial number with the camera.

If M9s are being shipped in the next few days I'd expect the current version of Lightroom to be able to open the files - unless of course Adobe release a new version of the RAW converter in the meantime.

A new ACR is needed for every new model, not unless they have already included the M9.

I believe the whole point of using .dng is that Adobe products can read any .dng - forever. The .dng envelope contains the metadata describing pixel dimensions and such.

I was able to read/process 2009 Canon 5D mk. 2 files with a 4 year-old version of Photoshop CS2, ACR and Bridge - once they had been run through Adobe's .DNG Converter. Leica's files are already "converted" to .dng as they are created in the camera.

My old system will be an acid test (can't even read SDHC), but I fully expect I'll be able to process M9 .dngs straight from the camera from the get-go with my existing old software.

From Adobe's DNG page (emphasis added):

DNG removes a potential barrier to new camera adoption, since raw files from new models will be immediately supported by Photoshop and other applications.

The DNG format allows for R&D savings by reducing the need to develop new formats and simplifying camera testing.

Assuming my understanding that ACR has something like 99.999999% odds of reading DNGs from an M9 immediately, isn't the real question about profiles? That's where people seemed to have the range of opinions about ACR/PS/LR.

If Leica and Adobe have been huddled together for the past couple of months, my guess is that all the Adobe products will benefit from the collaboration.

dng is dng and any version of LR can read them all...

are they optimized in any way? maybe? doubt it....LR has a built in custom profile maker which is extremely powerful...actually C1 has always had one as well....

no ned to worry....if you get your m9 tomorrow, you will be able to process the files in C1, LR and aperture and tell us all about it...

.dng is a standard format. The question is when will a custom M9 profile be available, if not already. Note that Capture One already shipped an M9 profile last month. It started some of the speculation that the M9 was coming soon.

LR2.4 will certainly read the M9 DNG. What won't be available till at least the next point release are any camera profiles - you will just get the default rendering as embedded into the DNG.

As regards older versions of CS/LR reading the DNG - as long as Leica have stuck to DNG V1.1 specification, yes, they will read. If however Leica have used any of the DNG V1.2 or DNG V1.3 enhancements, you will have to use one of the newer versions. However, that's unlikely.
