Epson 4000 problem (probably a simple one)

i am having a (likely amateurish) problem with the epson 4000 I am trying to install for use on my Mac G5. When I set the "Print Space" to the appropriate printer profile (Epson 4000 and Archival Matte), both the preview and the actual print come out solarized and highly magenta....none of the other generic colour-space choices give an accurate print (all are far too dark relative to my profiled monitor).

Thanks,

Nick, the magenta in print preview is ok because (I guess) the printer really only sees CMYK but if your actual print is solarized and came out with high magenta, I'd run nozzle check, see if there's a head clogged and needs some cleaning, ... I've bumped into these "many" times. :)

Also, double check if you've set to let Photoshop determine colors under color handling, choose proof instead of document.

So go through this again, Nick ... open up the image on Photoshop:

Click "View" -> 'Proof Setup" -> "Custom ..." choose the correct paper profile from Device to Simulate under "Proof Conditions", leave "Rendering Intent" to Perceptual.

Then go to Print with Preview, select proof, let photoshop determine colors, again choose the correct printer profile from the drop down menu ... that should be all.

I've been dealing with the same problem on an R800. Head cleaning helps. Had to do it several times - ink drains fast. I really like the colour prints I get from the little printer, but the b&W has been driving me grazy. I've now decided that life is too short to deal with it and have picked up a second hand 2100 that I plan to equip with piezography inks. When there are only greys and black it better not have a colour cast.

One thing you might try is to download QuadTone rip and print using that. The results on an R800 aren't that good with Epson ink as it has only one black and no greys. Your 4000 should give better results. QTR will only use the black and grey inks so again no colour cast. QTR is a $50 shareware. Download and try and buy only if you use it. You find QTR here: QuadToneRIP Overview

Appreciate all the suggestions, but this has nothing to do with hardware. The nozzles are clean and working.

Here are the permutations:

With the Colour Management Options in the Print Dialogue set as follows, I get these outcomes:

1.Source space : "Document -- untagged RGB"

Output Space : **anything** but the Epson Paper Profiles (in this case "Pro4000 Archival Matte")

...the Preview looks good, and the print is not bad but overall far too dark

2. Source Space: "Proof Setup"

Ouptut Space: ***Anything*** but the Epson Paper Profiles

....the preview looks good, and the print is close, but again too dark

3. Source Space: *Anything*

Output Space: Pro4000 Archival Matte (or any other paper & printer specific profile)

....the preview is lightly solarized and about 100 points magenta......and, if printed, looks exactly the same...

What do I do to get Photoshop to properly use the printer profiles????

Nick, you didn't mention that you've embedded the paper profile into the image file in Photoshop ... so do, View -> Proof Setup -> Custom -> Select the Pro400 Archival Matte ... -> click ok. Then go to print with preview ... Source Space: Proof ... Output Space: Pro4000 Archival Matte, the magenta preview can be safely "ignored" but the final print should be good.
