Tom M Posted September 6, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) After close to a year (while using a D700 and an LX3) I've loaded a film into my M7 and took it for a walk. I would be amiss not say, that my M7 spent nine months in New Jersey and Solms for a conversion to an optical ISO reader. No matter, the smooth mechanics of this superb instrument has no match elsewhere. While I've passed on the M8 because of the purported problems, I am anticipating the M9. Would someone be please kind enough to relate, how the shutter of the M8 (and likely, the M9) compares to the M7? Many thanks.

gwelland Posted September 6, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 6, 2009 M7 cloth shutter, M8 metal. I find the M7's shutter release noticeably more damped and quiet compared to the M8, and still quieter than my M8.2.
carstenw Posted September 6, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 6, 2009 It is louder, but in the M8.2 and upgraded M8, only very slightly. I now finally feel comfortable carrying my M6 and M8u (upgraded) together, and choosing based on the desired medium, not the loudness of the capture. zeitz Posted September 6, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 6, 2009 You did yourselft a dis-service by passing on the M8. I don't let Internet talk get in the way of enjoying life. I expect the M9 to fix the irritants and to be a gem that can be used for many years to come. The only reason I'm going M8 to M9 is to restore the lenses to their proper fields of view. I still have my M2 and M7, but the M8 is an extremely satisfying photographic tool.
Frank Sprow Posted September 6, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 6, 2009 Having just used my M8.2 and M7 (B&W) yesterday for a party, I find the shutter noise very similar between the two, just somewhat different in nature. BTW - re the M9, since I must frequently have a camera which functions without battery recharging capability (places that have no AC and DC only in vehicles), my M7 will stay with me for a long time as my "full frame". Frankly, the M8.2 fits my needs very well indeed so it will stay in the bag without a brother M9 until a rich aunt (?) leaves me great wealth.
