erlingmm Posted September 4, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Clips from the japanese site in a previous thread indicates that the M9 initially will come in two colours: Classic black, and steel grey/anthracite (similar to Leica R9 Anthracite Camera). What would you choose? Would the anthracite look good with black lenses?
Advertisement Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Hi erlingmm, Take a look here M9 - black or steel/anthracite?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
erg Posted September 4, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 4, 2009 I ordered mine in black. I feel sorry for those who have a silver chrome M8 with it's matching lenses. How are these lenses are going to look on the grey/anthracite M9 ?
Guest roey Posted September 4, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 4, 2009 Classic black, and steel grey/anthracite (similar to Leica R9 Anthracite Camera). AFAIK the japanese site only mentioned black paint or steel gray paint. Where did you find the reference to anthracite?
adan Posted September 5, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 5, 2009 I won't bore you all again with the full story, but I nearly missed out on the first 2 months of owning an M8 through specifying a color ahead of time (black in my case). This time my preferred color is "First available". Frankly I can see + and - for each color. Suchirugure would be kinky and make it easy to tell from my Mates at a distance. Black would just be classic. Both are paint, so no difference, presumably, in how they "wear" at the edges.

How are these lenses are going to look on the grey/anthracite M9 ? Somewhat like the nickel lenses on the black Leica A. lars_bergquist Posted September 5, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 5, 2009 The R8/R9 'anthracite', as I remember, is not 'paint' but a specially deposited ceramic coating. Should be very resistant to wear. Comments, R users? The old man from the Nickel Age
adan Posted September 5, 2009 Share #7 Posted September 5, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Lars, according to this site: Photo Profile on Leica MP Grey Anthracite Collectible Kit - MIR Image Library the MP anthracite was "hand-laquered" - but also supposedly abrasion-resistant. I think you are right that the R anthracite was a powder-coat or at least different from the MP, and perhaps different from the M9 (the color was listed as "peinto" - which seems to imply paint - but who knows for sure.) Then there is hammertone, also gray, but a different process yet.

TimF Posted September 5, 2009 Share #9 Posted September 5, 2009 I ordered mine in black. I feel sorry for those who have a silver chrome M8 with it's matching lenses. How are these lenses are going to look on the grey/anthracite M9 ? I have an anthracite MP, and the chrome lenses look fine on it; better IMVHO than the black ones do to be honest. Guest guy_mancuso Posted September 5, 2009 Share #11 Posted September 5, 2009 I liked the R9 anthracite it held up very nicely to hard use. I put a lot of mileage on mine
Bo_Lorentzen Posted September 5, 2009 Share #12 Posted September 5, 2009 I think Andy have it right. First available seems like a good color. Personally I have always preferred the metal finish and would be sad to see it go. .

vikasmg Posted September 6, 2009 Share #14 Posted September 6, 2009 Somewhat like the nickel lenses on the black Leica A. The old man from the Age of the Leica Standard In fact I have been using silver Leica lenses and an even more silver (!) Biogon on a GH1 and the eclectic combination looks much better than the homogenous GH1 with it's original kit lens! I have a silver M8, a black M6 and a mix of silver and black lenses as. I love the mix. Also, as long as it does the job it looks great - even with the brass visible through worn paint on the M6 :-) - Vikas
tadeyev Posted September 6, 2009 Share #15 Posted September 6, 2009 Hello all, Regarding this thread: in the PDF it is clear to see that the M9 in steel gray paint has a different black covering on the body, the fine grained one (I don't remember the proper 'Leica' name for it.) The black version has the larger 'pebble' grained effect covering. If they keep that variety (and the PDF is truly definitive) then this may be a point in people's choices...I personally prefer the steel gray but dislike the fine grain effect.. Since they are both painted (and the steel gray is not chrome plated) I doubt there will be much difference in how they wear long term unless the gray paint has different hardeners in it. Interestingly, there are protectors now above the strap attachments.... Ciao, Tadeyev
carstenw Posted September 6, 2009 Share #16 Posted September 6, 2009 The protectors are also there on the M8. I would be surprised if there are multiple coverings available, but you can't choose.
gwelland Posted September 6, 2009 Share #17 Posted September 6, 2009 Looks to me like the dimensions overall for the covering look identical to the M8 in which case Camera Leather will no doubt be able to offer your own 'al a carte' colour/texture combo very soon With respect to body colour, I chose 'don't care' in the absence of my real preference of chrome. I think either black or grey will look fine, with maybe black being a better 'stealth' colour amongst photographers to avoid the 'ooh, is that an M9' conversation'. carstenw Posted September 6, 2009 Share #19 Posted September 6, 2009 I still have my second leatherette covering, which I never applied to my M8 after the upgrade, since the vulcanite is nice enough... That could go on the M9, in case it comes with that finely pebbled covering again
wlaidlaw Posted September 6, 2009 Share #20 Posted September 6, 2009 I will confirm my order tomorrow (placed at beginning of August) at Grey/Anthracite. I would have preferred Chrome , as all my other Leicas are chrome. Given how paint finish has worn badly on some of my other Leica items, unless a new process is involved, which I hope it is, I am not too enthusiastic about paint versus hard chroming. The only upside is that refinishing may be less expensive. Wilson
