Reflex adapters

There's a thread going in the M8 forum http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/97006-new-visoflex-m9.html in which the following is suggested:

  • A thin camera body with digital sensor, electronics & shutter
  • M-adapter with rangefinder
  • R-adapter with mirror, focusing screen, pentaprism etc.

In the history of cameras most "new" ideas have already been tried without market success, but I've never heard of this one. Obviously we've seen Visoflexes and similar reflex adapters that fit on the front of a standard RF body; there were the Alpas with a coupled rangefinder in the same body as the reflex viewfinder; and there have been zillions of interchangeable backs (though very few in 35mm cameras).

Can anyone think of a precedent?

The system suggested in the quoted thread, in my opinion is a free-ride speculation with not a single chance to become a Leica product (or a product from someone else).

But... if you look at Sinar-m www.sinar.ch ... well is something like... a "thin" body with sensor onto which you can mount two kinds of "Visoflex" (mirror unit) for FF or MF lenses or a tube-lens adapter for MF lenses (Hasselblad, if I remember well); no RF of course, but it's really a highly modular system... I haven't idea if it's enjoing commercial success in the pro market: btw it's a company with an indirect relation with Leica (Sinar, old glorious name in studio camera, is owned by Jenoptik which strictly collaborates with Leica on electronics)

The Leica S1 digital scanning camera ( there were 3 models in the period 1996-2002 ish) has adaptors for both R and M lenses, plus other manufacturers' lenses.

The cameras have a 36mm² sensor of up to 16megapixels and are still popular professionally for still life applications. Scans can take around 20 seconds but are fine for archival work eg in museums and art galleries requiring high quality output with minimal post processing. Hunt around and you will find at least one for sale.

Cheers

Dunk, thank you. The S1's an interesting machine but perhaps too specialised, and doesn't seem to have any view- or range-finders apart from a tethered computer monitor.

Luigi, thanks. I wasn't aware of the Sinar-m. Here www.sinar.ch/site/index__gast-e-1774-50-1895.html there's a diagram of the system complete with two reflex modules (Sinar/Hasselblad and Nikon), plain tube, and bellows. All it needs now is a rangefinder module for M-Mount!
