jevidon Posted September 1, 2009 Share #13 Posted September 1, 2009 The Contax G1 and G2 were autofocus rangefinder cameras of very high quality with superb optics and cost a pittance compared to the Leica M's, and they were an abysmal failure in the marketplace. I have one, if anyone is interested. IMHO, Leica will not market an autofocus rangefinder camera as an M model. With practice, the excellent focusing on all Leica RF's are consistently more accurate and nearly as fast as an AF without the attendant motor noise of the focusing mechanism. Too bad there aren't more Leica users, or this would have the potential to develop into a very interesting worldwide conflagration. Well, actually Messsucher means "measuring finder" - both functions through one finder, as opposed to the screwmount Leicas, which had separate rangefinder and viewfinder windows/optical paths. They were also rangefinder cameras, but not "Messsucher" (M) cameras. The Contax G cameras were rangefinders. They set focus by measuring (finding) the distance (range) to the subject.
