doug_m Posted August 31, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 31, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Any speculation on the max shutter speed for the M9? If it is 1/4000 of a sec some of us- who will be buying M9s- might also be holding onto our M8s for some admittedly rare situations when we want 1/8000 shooting. Advertisement Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 Hi doug_m, Take a look here Max shutter speed on the M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gwelland Posted August 31, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 31, 2009 They might just increase the usable ISO range down to 80. Tada! Problem solved. I guess we'll have to wait and find out eh?
lars_bergquist Posted August 31, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 31, 2009 Agreed. The only useful aspect of the 1/8000 speed is the 1/250 synch speed. But absent a lower sensor speed (which would be completely artificial, and would bring no better image) there are also ND filters. One that I carry often is marked "B+W 46 KSM POL". If Iset it not to polarise, it is a good c. 1.5x ND filter. ISO 64! The old man from the Age of f:4.
sfokevin Posted August 31, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 31, 2009 It would depend on whether you have a M9 or a M9u

The old man from the Age of f:4.5 You have hit one of my favorite gripes: It is impossible to mount both an IR filter and an ND filter on the 24 and 21 Summilux
lars_bergquist Posted August 31, 2009 Share #7 Posted August 31, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Jaap, you have touched a fear of mine: With a full format camera, it will in most cases -- at least with wide lenses -- be impossible to stack an IR filter and a polariser, because the mounts will cause hard vignetting. So unless such a camera is totally immune to IR, and it is difficult to believe it will be, there remains only for us to beg either Leica or B+W or maybe Hoya to produce a combination filter, i.e. a polariser with IR-cutting coatings. And imagine what that would cost! The old man from the Age of the POOMA
jaapv Posted August 31, 2009 Share #8 Posted August 31, 2009 It is not just the vignetting, the whole construction makes it impossible. Do you think it would be possible to fit two filters in one series mount ring? A polarizer is utterly impossible in that lens hood.
lars_bergquist Posted August 31, 2009 Share #9 Posted August 31, 2009 I referred not just to those two lenses (which I completely lack interest in). This would be a general condition. Leica M lenses are designed for compactness, meaning that the leeway between the angle of view of most wide lenses, and the filter mount, cannot be that great. Result: Vignetting when you stack filters. The cropped sensor of the M8 creates lots of leeway, but with the M9, it will all be gone! adli Posted August 31, 2009 Share #10 Posted August 31, 2009 Try the 18mm with Leicas IR filter and hood on a full frame sensor. It will not work since you will see the inner edges of the hood in the corners of the pictures. So lets hope the M9 don't need IR filters, or else Leica needs to come up with some new solution for the 18mm, which would not be good for those already owning one.
