Max shutter speed on the M9

Agreed. The only useful aspect of the 1/8000 speed is the 1/250 synch speed. But absent a lower sensor speed (which would be completely artificial, and would bring no better image) there are also ND filters. One that I carry often is marked "B+W 46 KSM POL". If Iset it not to polarise, it is a good c. 1.5x ND filter. ISO 64!

You have hit one of my favorite gripes: It is impossible to mount both an IR filter and an ND filter on the 24 and 21 Summilux

Jaap, you have touched a fear of mine: With a full format camera, it will in most cases -- at least with wide lenses -- be impossible to stack an IR filter and a polariser, because the mounts will cause hard vignetting. So unless such a camera is totally immune to IR, and it is difficult to believe it will be, there remains only for us to beg either Leica or B+W or maybe Hoya to produce a combination filter, i.e. a polariser with IR-cutting coatings.

And imagine what that would cost!

It is not just the vignetting, the whole construction makes it impossible. Do you think it would be possible to fit two filters in one series mount ring? A polarizer is utterly impossible in that lens hood.

I referred not just to those two lenses (which I completely lack interest in). This would be a general condition. Leica M lenses are designed for compactness, meaning that the leeway between the angle of view of most wide lenses, and the filter mount, cannot be that great. Result: Vignetting when you stack filters.

The cropped sensor of the M8 creates lots of leeway, but with the M9, it will all be gone!

Try the 18mm with Leicas IR filter and hood on a full frame sensor. It will not work since you will see the inner edges of the hood in the corners of the pictures.

So lets hope the M9 don't need IR filters, or else Leica needs to come up with some new solution for the 18mm, which would not be good for those already owning one.
